PHL on FIH radar: Innovations can go global
UTHRA GANESAN
HYDERABAD, JANUARY 15: As the Premier Hockey League (PHL) party warms up, the game in the country faces a serious dilemma. While many see the League as a much-needed makeover, there also the Doubting Thomases ready with a poser: the glamour and glitz might make the game popular but will this spectacle help India become a hockey superpower again?
The answer to this question isn?t just important for India but for the game globally. With hockey?s popularity on wane, the international body is keenly watching the Indian experiment. Former India goalkeeper Ashish Ballal talks about this: ??The international federation and the Asian federation are keeping a close watch on the PHL. The FIH Rules Board has been considering this format of four quarters for long. One can actually see this happening internationally if things go well in PHL.??
Since these are early days for international hockey going the NBA way , the focus at the Gachibowli Stadium was more local. The suspicion has stemmed from the fact that Leagues don?t always ensure rise in standard of the game.
Take the Malaysian Leagues, for instance. The Malaysian League has failed to propel the national team into the big league despite being in existence for quite some time now.
The best man to talk on the issue happens to be India coach Jagbir Singh, who has played for clubs in Malaysia and Germany. ??PHL is different and hence it is unfair to compare it with any other league,?? he says. He adds that the other leagues around the world are the domestic versions of the regular game while PHL is unique.
Ballal puts across a different viewpoint saying that PHL has much more to offer than improving the standard of the game in the country. ??To be honest, I don?t want the PHL to be seen as a development programme for hockey at the local level. It is meant to be more than that. A showcase for the best available talent to pump up the stature of the game in the country and give it more visibility and make it popular,?? argues Ballal.
But Ballal wants two changes in the PHL format to make it more competitive. Every team should have a distinct local flavour and the League a home-and-away format. ??One needs to build a local consumer base if one intends to market a product. Here there is only one venue. The federation needs to address the infrastructure problem if the game has to really go places,?? he says.
The ?lack of competition?, which Ballal talks about, is the main reason for the standard of game not improving despite the existence of a League with international players. The Malaysian import to PHL
Nor Azlan Baker agrees: ??Few professionals compete in the League back home. But in the PHL the players are more professional, most of whom have played for India. So this can be much better than our national league.??
Maybe, it is this strength that happens to be PHL?s biggest hope and something that excites Jagbir. ??PHL will help us select the best from these teams for the future national camps,?? he says.

PHL popularity
I just looked at espnstar.com and saw pics of the PHL games. The crowds are huge - congratulations IHF on a successful product.
Sher-e_jalandhar - nice cheerleaders.

PHL
Can't believe the comment on the crowds - giving away free tickets doesn't mean a big crowd and the gaps were obvious even then....this is a complete waste of time run by an inefficient federation with no regard for the players and a broadcaster trying to cover up for the loss of its cricket rights ...

RE: sceptic
there are no crowds, there is no innovation. Crowds comment was extracting urine.
having quarters is not innovative. The hockey league seems just like any other tournament that is played, just that for once it is being held in india.
The only way to get crowds to the game is to increase the standard of play and educate the public so that they understand the idea of hockey. Hockey has no excuse for not being a spectator sport - the skills, speed and ball movement is a lot higher than most sports. Because of this, it may lose its commercial appeal though.
I am sure you agreed with the cheerleaders comment though?

Bad English commentary on ESPN
Totally terrible 'yankee' kinda English Commentary by somebody called Chuck on ESPN. We've borne it woefully for the first week. I certainly hope that the bosses at ESPN will put a full stop to this rubbish where the commentator is not only ignorant of the rules of the sport, has no clue of player identification and above all keeps calling the Umpires as "Referees'.
am more shocked than surprised at the poor standards of ESPN.

Re : Ganesh on ESPN commentary
Agree with Ganesh. The English commentary is attrocious to say the least, with the long pulldrawn American accent. This is not Basketball or American Football going on with theatrics.
ESPN must get specialised hockey commentators who are Indian (as in their Hindi telecast) for the Indian audiences to understand and enjoy PHL.
It is still not late as only 4 out of 20 matches have been played.

Advice to Ganesh and Ashok Kumar
It's simple man..... Watch the PHL without the English commentary. Know it's difficult but it is the only solution till they replace this cocky guy. Follow the game without the audio......

ganesh is right
chuck shriner knows no hockey. in the sultans vs. warriors match, the umpire has indicated a pen. stroke. chuck said," well the referee has indicated a penalty corner." he must first learn the difference between the 2 properly. horrible pronounciation of the names. espn can get anupam ghulati for the job. he is perhaps the best hockey commentator in india.

ESPN Disappoints
Chennai Veeran and the others correctly point out at English commentator Chuck Shriner's ignorance of hockey. I think he has just been planted in the studio at Singapore and thereby is making a complete fool of himself. It is downright cheating on their viewers by ESPN.
Also Chennai Veeran has rightly suggested Anupam Ghulati for commentary as he is the best around.
I am a supporter of Sher e Jalandhar and fell so angry when this yankee commentator misprounces the teams and players names. It is really frustrating. Get him out.

U got it Chennai Veeran.
ESPNStar has finally woken up regarding the English commentary. And Chennai Veeran, it seems that your voice was heard. Thanks guys and Jasmine Bains. It was a pleasure to hear Anupam Ghulati and not Chuck doing the commentary in the Hi Flier - Maratha match. Better late than never. Keep it up ESPN.
