Sydney - Australia's Olympic and world women's hockey champions slammed local television Friday for a show depicting lesbianism in the sport.

Julie Towers said it was a disgrace that Channel Nine's 60 Minutes programme had chosen to focus a story on how the world's best player, Alyson Annan, had "come out".

Annan is sharing a house in Amsterdam with her lover, former Dutch hockey captain Carole Thate, who led her side to a bronze medal in last year's Sydney Olympics.

The pair's relationship blossomed after the Olympics, when the Australian ended a two-year marriage with Argentine hockey international Max Caldas.

"They were just interested in one of the girls in the team because she has turned gay," Towers said before flying out with the Australian team for a five-match tour of Argentina.

"It is really sad that your sexual and personal lives come into it to be able to get a story."

Annan described herself as a woman in her first gay relationship, rather than a lesbian.

She is due to return to Australia in June after agreeing with new national coach David Bell to spend two months training for Australia's defence of the Champions Trophy in the Netherlands in August.

Australia's high performance manager Judy Lang said the TV interview was likely to affect the way she was received.

"There is no doubt there is going to be a degree of discomfort," Lang said.

But Australian vice-captain Louise Dobson, who posed nude for a pear advert in 1999, urged her team-mates to support Annan.

"It is something that is very much accepted, homosexuality or heterosexuality, everyone accepts everything these days," the fullback said.

"If it was an every day Joe Blow it wouldn't be such a big issue.

"People are going to obviously have opinions but in the end it is basically what Alyson wants to do and I think that is acceptable."

Good for the Team and good for Annan. Her personal life is no one's business. Judge her on her performance - not her personal choices. The fact she and her teammates even have to deal with this is absurd. I find it interesting the media focus on women in sport, and here Hockey, yet not the men. There are gay men out there too - and it should be no more acceptable to "out" them either. Annan is an exceptional player and has done much for hockey - I say leave her be and let her play the game she loves. Also, leave her teammates be - it is no ones business. Good luck to the HockeyRoos and Annan!

I believe that the hockeyroos have every reason to be unhappy with such publicity. they are the best womens hockey team in the world, yet the only publicity they seem to get is because Alyson Annan (the best player ever and the best player in the world) is a lesbian. how about praising the girls for their achievements and leave their personal lives out of it!!!

SHE IS FREE
AL: DON'T ACCEPT AGAIN AN INTERVIEW IF THOSE ARE THE RULES. YOU ARE FREE. LET THEM SPEAK ABOUT YOUR TERRIFIC HOCKEY LEVEL, IT'S ENOUGH. YOU ARE THE BEST, IS THERE ANY DOUBT?

i was to young to see how greater player alyson was because i didnt play hockey in 2000
but from thing i have read she must have been great.i find it disgraceful that she left the hockeyroos before her retirement, she is the reason why they didnt win a medal but the mens team did which was still pretty awsome for our country!!!
