The International Hockey Federation (FIH) launched its first official World Ranking System today.

The ranking system determines the pool composition of major FIH and
Continental Federation events and their qualifiers. In future further
comparisons of relative strengths of international active countries will be
published at regular intervals, at the end of each set of related events
(e.g. Olympic Games; World Cups; Champions Trophies and Challenges;
Continental championships).

The methodology for the calculation of world rankings is based upon final
rankings of countries? teams at Olympic Games, FIH world level events,
Continental Championships, and all qualifying events for these tournaments.
Separate rankings are made for men and women and the points for Continental
Federation events will be weighted to reflect the varying
standards/participation that currently exist between the five Continental
Federations.

The ranking system reflects both current and past performances. However,
results from the past will be progressively less weighted year by year (25%
discount per year over a 4-year cycle) until they are deleted from the
calculations.

The system ensures that, as far as rankings are concerned, success at a
single tournament, even the Olympic Games or World Cup, will not be
sufficient to make up for poor form in the preceding 3-4 years, and vice
versa. It is intended that the ranking system will truly reflect a team?s
performance over a 4-year cycle.
The top twenty men?s and women?s teams are:

Men Points
1. Germany 1928
2. Netherlands 1805
3. Australia 1800

FIH Hon Secretary General, Peter Cohen, commented, ?The introduction of the
FIH World Ranking System is a positive step to contribute to hockey?s
profile and a credit to the FIH Events and Competitions Committee. The FIH
World Ranking is not as complex as some systems used by other sports,
because it was decided, when specifically applied to hockey, the rankings
would be more accurate if focussed on performances at major tournaments.
Our sport will undoubtedly benefit from the addition of these statistics,
plus the qualification for major tournaments will be more logical,
transparent and therefore easier to understand.?

A full explanation of the FIH World Rankings can be found in the
Events/Results section on www.FIHockey.org and further discussion of the
system will appear in the November issue of World Hockey Online magazine. Go

Better late than never. At last a FIH ranking system for those who follow hockey. Now we need some more positive steps from FIH such as makinhg live coverage on TV mandatory for hosting any ranking tournament.

Unfair to Canada...
Wolfman, the way I read it, Canada (15th) is ahead of only 2 countries (not 3) going to the Qualifier: Poland (17th) and Cuba (18th). Still, I agree with you that the selection for the Qualifier is highly unfair for Canada.

It is indeed even more unfair for the Indian Women: they are ranked 13th and are ahead of 3 out of 10 teams going to the Qualifier: Ireland (14th), Ukraine (15) and Russia (17).

GB/Home Countries situation?
How will the Great Britain / individual Home Countries situation work in the FIH ranking?

If one of the Home Countries (e.g England) had won the European Championship, Great Britain would be qualified for the Olympic Games.

In reverse, how will the result of GB at the Olympics be allocated back to the Home Countries?

Malaysia ranked 10th? Going by their current form, they should be way down in the Top 20.

This ranking system makes a mockery of current form. Yes, India ,too for instance, who are in top form and have won the Asia Cup and Afro-Asian Games gold medal.

But the joke for me is still Malaysia, who i think will not be able to even beat Egypt and come in for tough opposition from Nigeria as well.

Please, hockey lovers, dont take this ranking system as an indication of current form.

I was wondering if Malaysia's ranking was slightly skewed because they hosted the last world cup. They didn't qualify, so I assume they would have gotten an increase number of points without even having to qualify for that tourney. Not sure if that was taken into account.

Its interesting to see Korea in the top 4 when we have seen em only play a few times in the past year or 2 and they have been overshadowed by their asian counterparts India and Pakistan.

My prediction is that Spain will jump into the top 6 over the next year, Oltmanns has them playing well right now. The teams that will slide are Malaysia and Argentina. Retegui and Lombi can only hang on for so long. Paredes is good but can't carry this team.

India's ranking
India's fans should calm down.

Unless the Indian men's team performs well in a major tournament ie.
CT, World Cup or OLympic Games, it will never progress beyond 5-6.

That is the ultimate test. So unless India performs in those tourneys
we can't complain about not being ranked higher.

Looking at the new rankings, the best hockey nation in the world
is currently Netherlands
followed by
Australia
Argentina
Germany
Korea

So looking at the list, people saying that Australia has an easily ride to major championships because we only have to bet New Zealand is wrong, New Zealand is ranked (men 9, women 11) and ranked 8 overall in hockey, so they should not be considered easy beats.

Note: New Zealand has a population of 3.9 million versus India which has 1.0 Billion, surely India with that such large population base should be albe to produce better hockey players than New Zealand.

Who does Argentina have to play against inorder of qualification to major championships?

Small countries
I think unfair is the whole system of international games. For example my countries women have played only in one European Nations cup qualifying tournament in the whole 4 years. Is that fair when other teams play in some 4 ranking tournaments every year?

All small countries have one problem - if you don't qualify for the Eurochamps you are out of international games for 4-5 years. It's a wrong way developing hockey in the whole world and it makes what we have in the rankings - only elite teams may colect points. I think it will be a different story from 2005, when Eurochamps will be held every 2 years. I'd suggest arranging also a direct qualification tournament to the World cup.

Canadian Men in 2004 Olympic Qualifier

It?s an exciting day for all hockey in Canada as FHC was informed by the FIH that our men?s team will be competing in the 2004 Olympic Qualifier.
Following confirmations and one non-acceptance of all the eligible teams to compete in the men's Olympic Qualifier to be played in Madrid, Spain from 2/13 March 2004, the participating teams for the tournament will be Belgium, Canada, Great Britain, India, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Pakistan, Poland, South Africa and Spain.

Cuba advised the FIH that it did not wish to exercise its right to compete in the qualifying tournament. As a result, Canada, the 1st reserve country, accepted an invitation to participate in the tournament. France now becomes the 1st reserve country for the tournament.

Canada is ranked 11th in the 12 team Olympic qualifying tournament as a result of their 15th place world ranking ? the world rankings only being used to establish the pools. Therefore Canada, as the 12th ranked qualified team will play Greece at least one week prior to commencement of the Qualifier Tournament in a play-off competition (best of 3 games). In principle these matches will be played in Madrid unless other arrangements are made between the two teams.

The pools for the Olympic qualifying tournament will be based upon the FIH Tournament Regulations for a 2 pool competition, namely:

Pool A
1. Netherlands (2)
4. Great Britain (8)
5. Spain (9)
8. Japan (12)
9. South Africa (13)
12. Poland (17)

Pool B
2. Pakistan (5)
3. India (6)
6. Malaysia (10)
7. New Zealand (11)
10. Belgium (14)
11. Canada (15)

I wonder why you are quoting word for word the announcement that appeared on the FIH site informing the withdrawal of Cuba. You are just lucky and you don't deserve to be in Madrid since you did not qualify through the right procedure, whether fair or not.

There are countries like Australia , Canada who have to come through easy regional rounds. Asia and European continental teams are more stronger. Hence they have to be acomodated ( either more teams or more points) And YEAH WHAT ABOUT SMALL COUNTRIES???????? Am talking about women's here alright?

I SUPPOSE THESE RATINGS SHOULD BE FOR ALL THE HOCKEY PLAYING NATIONS. FOR THIS IHF CAN TAKE THE PERFORMANCE OF THE LAST 2 YEARS(FOR THE NATIONS WHO HAVE GOT RANKING LOWER THAN 20). I SUPPOSE, IT WOULD BE HELPFUL FOR DEVELOPING THE HOCKEY.

Mate, India do have better players than New Zealand.

What hockey events have the Kiwis won this year ? Balls !

NZ is basically a rugby nation. They have an innovative cricket team and a decent netball side but suck at every other sport.

India are better at most sports than New Zealand -- hockey, volleyball, tennis, squash, badminton, track & field and defintely ODI cricket(although you may be better in tests).

Big games
India may be ranked above NZ and rightly so after their more consistant (if you can say consistant and India in the same sentance) performances in the past year (& attending Olympics). But lets look at revent results between NZ and India. Series won by NZ 2-1 with one draw. World Cup qualifier NZ 1 India 0. World Cup NZ 2 India 1.

But a) who cares about results this year - there are no major tournments (qualifiers WC or Olympics).
b) NZ has dominated India the past few games at big tournments

Secondly to those people who say that NZ (men or women) have it easy with qualifying, I would give anything to have NZ at the Asian qualifying. To have to beat Aust in a 3 test series - good luck to any team in the world.

Anyway lets see India under pressure in the two major tournment :)
My prediction - they will choke at one of the tournments

Current Ranking Justified.
The current ranking is justified. These rankings are drawn up based on the Last Four years perfomances. So whether India won 2 back to back tournamnents does not make them climd to # 1 position. I think India's current position is tuely justified and this is the launchpad for us to go on top from here. And I am sure that in the coming months India will prove that their resurgence in Hockey both men and Women is just not temparory but shear determination to show the world we are stong enough to take on anyone.

As far as FIH ranking, this was long pending and good it happened just in right time before the Olympics. Some are not satisfied and some have rejected the rankings but truely this is just the begining.

To NZ v India
Nz's recent record against India isn't really much of a factor going
into their clash at Madrid.

The sides haven't met since the last world cup.
Remember, India have had a coaching change and are playing a completely different style of hockey to Cedric de Souza's team which NZ met last.

I'd back India to beat NEw Zealand now. The Kiwis weren't all that impressive in the Champions Challenge and you feel that if Hayden Shaw isn't on song, they will struggle.

TO Andrew Fleming
Mr Fleming, let me tell you this is nothing but unfair.

There cannot be a Ranking System that fits everyone, because that is something impossible. I think it's good to have countries all over the world, from every spot, taking place.

The thing about small countries..with less population, has nothing to do here.

China has 50 times more population than Argentina. So what? Are you saying it's unfair to Argentina too?

New Zealand has 100 times less population than China or the States and they wipe them out in rugby...any time..any place

So? I don't see your point,Mr.

Brazil has 3 times more population than Argentina and we beat them off..

It's not the number of population, is how people devote to that sport..
We can beat you 150 times out of 150 soccer matches.. and we are in similar population conditions

Besides, Argentina is no doubt one of the top 5 teams of the world. Are you saying that if we had to challenge other countries in order to qualify, we wouldn't?

I think you are just upset because of the frustration of losing the World Cup at home, and the Leonas' Victory..

Grow up, you still have 3 more years to go till next World Cup.. and to take your chances to win the WC. Don't take it personal

Anyways.. you are forgetting that World Champion is not qualifying automatically..(well.. of course..as you couldn't win.. I see you've skipped this)..

I'm not saying it's unfair, but,..anyways... what is fair today?

You see, we also lose here in Argentina, but, anyways, I think this system rules, and it was time it was put into practice

Stop moaning about what is going on today, wait for an year or so till everything gets in its place.. I know today it looks unfair, but look into the future.. and tell me.. is it worthy?

I think it is.

Good Luck People

Go Leonas!
