Hockey’s first art exhibition, "Artistick", was held as hockey’s contribution to the International Olympic Committee’s Year of Culture and Education in Sport, during the European Nations Cup in Barcelona, Spain.
"Artistick" fused hockey and art, with 35 international artists creating works from a base of a wooden hockey stick. International Olympic Committee Honorary President for Life Juan Antonio Samaranch opened the unique exhibition on 7 September, praising the International Hockey Federation on its enthusiasm for such project. Klaus Schormann, IOC Culture and Education Commission member and International Modern Pentathlon Federation President, was also at the opening.
Els van Breda Vriesman, FIH President, stated, "The relationship between sport, culture and education is very important. Hockey prides itself on being a sport that our athletes can play at the highest level and still study and achieve in education. Hockey also has a long tradition in art, dating back to early Egyptian artefacts and at "Artistick" we have seen the continuation of this relationship."
FIH Executive Board member and newly elected President of the European Hockey Federation, Leandro Negre initiated the project, in collaboration with the Real Federacion Espanola de Hockey and local gallery Galeria d’Art Horizon. The exhibition will be displayed at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland, at a date to be confirmed.
A Virtual gallery of "Artistick" will appear on www.FIHockey.org from the end of next week, plus the exhibition will be featured in World Hockey Online magazine. Click here to subscribe.
