THE rain welcomed several international teams to the opening ceremony of the 18th Banks International Hockey Festival at the Astro Turf of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex yesterday.
Following the opening ceremony visitors Southern State University were subjected to a 8-0 drubbing at the hands of the Barbados Combined Junior team.
The pacey Patrina Brathwaite and the crafty Joanna Davis led the Juniors with both of them completing hat-tricks.
Keisha Warner’s tenth-minute stike and Charlia Warner’s 19th-minute goal completed the scoreline during the consistent showers.
The the week-long festival opened with 20 teams on parade, led by the Poonka Ruk-a-Tuk band.
The Barbados Landship provided engrossing entertainment for the vistors and some players voluntarily participated in the folk dancing creating a festival atmosphere.
“This is the best festival in the world!” declared president of the Barbados Hockey Federation Anthony Maughn during his welcome address.
“The friendship and camaraderie is not seen anywhere else in the world,” He added.
The Everest Hiker Hockey team from Guyana was adjudged the best visiting team on parade, while Old Gold Roosters was the best local team on parade.
The Banks Hockey Festival has grown to become the most anticipated event on the local hockey callender and over 100 international club teams have participated in the last 17 years.
This year 15 international contingents will participate in four categories – men’s, women’s, mixed and veterans. Nineteen teams are expected to compete in the men’s division, while 16 teams will compete in the women’s, 17 in the mixed gender and seven teams in the veterans division.
The defending men’s champion A Badd Connection (ABC) from Barbados will be looking to repeat last year’s championship performance.
However ABC should be watchful of their rivals Maple which they defeated 3-1 in the final and the Guyanese side Loco Motion which are also contenders.
ABC open their campaign against Loco Motion at Barclays, Wildey today at 10 a.m. while Maple will play Deacons Farm at Kensington Oval.
Women’s defending champions RAF Flyers have not returned to the competition and last year’s losing finalist Old Gold Roosters should be favoured to take the coveted crown. Remnants of Barbados are the defending mixed title champions and Old Gold Roosters are the veterans defending champion. Games will be played at the Astro Turf, Police Sports Club at Weymouth, Banks Brewery Sports Club at the Brewery, Kensington Oval and Cable & Wireless Sports Club at Wildey.
The festival continues today at the Astro Turf from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and at other grounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

good luck also to loco-motion in the tournament, i think if you guys can put away abc in this first game, then you should certainly make the finals!

In Winners Row
During the Tournament's history, how many 'non-Bajan' teams have managed to be in winners row in the Banks Tournament ???
How could a country that can barely manage to place in a Caribbean Tournament manage to consistently win at their own International Tournament ??? Is it that their National Selectors are choosing the wrong players to represent the country ??? Or could it be something else ... Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm ...............

Having been 4 times to Barbados, 1993, 1995, 1997 and 2000 we have decided to try another part of the world. We are going in 2005 to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Hong Kong and then "chilling out" in the Maldives.
Hope to be back another year but we are getting older by the minute but still enjoying ourselves.

At what date will the Banks Hockey Festival start this year (2005)? Some of us want to come and participate by playing with the bajan team, if possible. We (appr. 3 females)like to come because we enjoyed it so much all the years before.
Like hearing from you
