Not with the way they act
2 reasons why Kenya won't get back to the heady heights of the early 1970's.
1) The playing field is no linger level, in that synthetic turf is now required, and Kenya's is terrible,
2) This is the 4th time that Kenya have not honoured their agreement with Uganda. Without playing competative hockey, even against weaker sides, Kenya have no hope of even qualifying for the Olympics, yet alone coming 4th!

Disgraceful. What is going on with Kenyan hockey?
I remember the great teams of the late 60s & early 70s. Kenya beat Pakistan, India, Germany & Holland in some of the test series...
Agree with Chris J-Kenyan hockey is nowhere now.
Very sad.

The thing is that African hockey could (should) be competing at the highest level. It does in every other "open" sport. By "open", I exclude cricket and rugby, as the teams are seeded, and I don't count South Africa as "African Hockey".
The African hockey player is extremely talented, and from very very early ages. In Uganda there is a player, then aged 12, who scored 46 goals in 6x20 minute matches. He was reverse sweeping into the top of the net at 10 years old.
Their stamina is extraordinary - look at the long distance runners from Kenya, Ethiopia, Algeria, Morocco etc. Players in Uganda will happily play 2 or 3 full matches in a day if asked to do so.
Kenya has, probably, the best mix available, with the magic skills of the Asian player, and the raw strength, stamina and techical ability of the African player, they SHOULD be at the top of the tree.
However, the cost of synthetic surfaces has severely limited the ability of African countries to compete at the top level. This is the real disgrace of hockey in the world.

east african hockey needs to be seriously revamped ,,to achieve ths standards set by the ugandan and kenyan teams in the 60's and 70's, especially in uganda whose league was renowned for its players some of whom were world class like malkit singh sond, who led the ugandan team to the munich olympics, its going to be a long time before players of such pedigree evolve, much of the success was owed to the asian influence in the country , unlike these days , there are hardly any asian players in any of the national sporting teams.
young players need to be encouraged to go into the game, to revive the long lost tradition of hockey

Ugandan hockey has great potential and needs a lot of work. We need inspiration and help from the old stars of the 60s & 70s. as you all know, we have very poor playing surface which just puts the sport down even if we have alot of interest. We do not mind the asians playing but they donot make our game. Ugandans have potential to do wonders, especially the women. We are working on it

The selection of the Kenyan Hockey team is down to a lot of politics. I trained with the potential candidates for the nationals squad and many of the better players did not make the team. However, the coach's female partner seemed to ease in quite quickly. Matters like this need to be sorted out. There are many very good hockey players around Kenya. With some better coaching, more enthusiasm from the players and some improved pitches etc, maybe we could head up again?
