On Saturday the hockey season came to an end when Young Stars beat The Athlete's Foot 2-0 in the KO Final. This was their ninth triumph in this competition and this makes them the club with the most victories. The final was scheduled to be played on the new synthetic surface but unfortunately due to technical problems this was not possible. The gravel surface pitch at Kordin is certainly going out with a fight but this week work continued on the new surface as the HAM continues in its efforts to upgrade the complex. These works will ensure that local game will have a pitch up to international standards.

Young Stars put one hand on the trophy after barely three minutes when from Young Stars first corner, Chris Bugeja caught The Athlete's Foot defence napping and fired in to put his team in the lead. This was one of the few short corners that Young Stars had and after this won they failed to create any problems for Mallia. The Athlete's Foot record from short corners was even more pathetic. They notched up at least a dozen but not once did they test Mizzi in the Young Stars goal.

The game, after the initial goal from Young Stars, was fairly balanced but Young Stars remained the sharper as The Athlete's Foot chronic lack of punch up front remained their biggest problem. As time passed the heat began to take its toll but both sides sportingly kept at their game. Towards the end the game threaten to boil over but some intelligent umpiring soon brought matters under control and five minute from the final whistle Young Stars sealed the issue when, with The Athlete's Foot pressing for the equalizer, Chris Bugeja broke free and from the edge of the dee fired in a rising shot that gave Mallia no chance.

The Athlete's Foot got their chance to reduce the arrears when in the last minute they were awarded but Caruana Smith saw his attempt go wide. The final whistle found Young Stars celebrating their ninth KO triumph and their second honour this season following their Challenge Cup victory. For The Athlete's Foot the final brought the curtain down on another dismal season and left them without an honour for the fourth year running.

turf
A friend of mine who finds particular interest in the game of hockey ( and used to play before ) in Malta ( through media ) asked if I we' re to go and see the match between Sliema and YS. Now, I've never been to watch a senior match and the fact that he had to drag me of the chair was quite a feat. Of course, the reason of going was not to see the game itself but rather the much promised turf.
The face he wore when he saw the players practising on the gravel pitch was one to laugh at. We had actually came all the way to see a game back on gravel. He was so dissapointed that he left the ground before the match even began.
Now before anyone starts 'looting' the screen with defensive comments it is a pity that several of these people leave the sport for such ridiculous stuff, especially elderly people who take a like in hockey, but then again he doesn't play. So what the devil !!!!! ( that's sarcastic in case nobody notices )
He now doesn't interest himself in hockey !!!

P.S. I heard it was a good game so prosit to all the players.
P.s. The consolation prize for my dear friend was to see yet again the last match on gravel - hopefully!

Turf!
The previous contributor to this site has a talent ... for novels.

For the information of all those genuinely interested, the turf will be installed at Kordin not in time but with the highest standards. Myself and my colleagues on the HAM executive committee are making sure that all work to be done is done with established standards of the contracts we have with various contactors and we are not going to rush anything to the detriment of having a high quality pitch. We owe it to all those who contributed and guaranteed that this massive project for a small association will materialize.

well this friend of yours must be really high class, isnt he. I am sorry he cant stand to dust, well maybe he could buy one metre square of the pitch and keep it home so that he can look at it all day while enjoying a cup of tea. Well he wouldn't know what he is missing at Kordin.
