5th June 2003
Ireland will be boosted by the addition of three Munster men Wes Bateman, John Jermyn and David Hobbs to the squad for the return three match series against England at the National Stadium, University College Dublin on 14th-16th June. Last weekend Ireland drew the first game 2-2 with goals from Gordon Elliott and Stephen Butler but lost the next two matches 2-1 and 2-0 to lose the first series two games to nil. Ireland will be hoping to go one better and offer a repeat performance of their historic victory last year when they ended a remarkable 53 year gap to defeat England three goals to one in Manchester.
Two weeks after this series of matches the National Squad head off to Vienna to play Austria together with their fellow European Cup Qualifiers Russia and Switzerland (26-28 June) as they continue along this intensive build up to the European Nations Cup in September in Barcelona.
The series should be a special occasion for Annadale's Chris Jackson as injury permitting he will become only the 40th Irish International to pass the 50 cap mark since making his debut in 1996 as an eighteen year old.
Ireland Squad for Series versus England (14 to 16 June)
1. Wesley Bateman (GK-Cork H'qins) -- 9 caps, 0 goals
2. Jason Black (Cork H'qins) -- 42 caps, 3 goals
3. Paddy Brown (Instonians) -- 44 caps, 3 goals
4. Karl Burns (Cork C of I) -- 9 caps, 0 goals
5. Stephen Butler (Glenanne) -- 39 caps, 13 goals
6. Gordon Elliott (Pembroke W.) -- 25 caps, 13 goals
7. Nigel Henderson (GK-Pembroke W.) -- 38 caps, 0 goals
8. David Hobbs (Cork C of I) -- 13 caps, 0 goals
9. Mark Irwin (Instonians) -- 30 caps, 8 goals
10. Chris Jackson (Annadale) -- 49 caps, 9 goals
11. John Jermyn (Cork C of I) -- 6 caps, 2 goals
12. Errol Lutton (Lisnagarvey) -- 74 caps, 3 goals

How come when David Smyth was in England, he was never overlooked? Slane at the minute just isn't good enough, plus the performances of Jonny Moore this season would indicate he has more of a chance of being involved in the senior set-up than Slane!

Dave Smyth is a class act and this comes from somebody who has played against him many times. he was oustanding at the Club championships and from what i hear he was excellent in Cannock too.

Wayne Rooney ...you obviously have a similar IQ level to your name sake.

Wow, who are these people? R u suggesting that they should be on the U21 training squad with Ronan or something. I think Ireland has better players than these three amongst their ranks. Firstly, we don't even play indoor over here so riley would be incredibly useful at outdoor, secondly Gallagher who played for english 18's-why would Ireland need him, when the irish 18's won the european championship and england got relegated, hahaha, and lastly limberick seems the only one who might get an outside chance of playing with Ronan!!!!!!

I agree Smith has talent- just not at hockey. he hits it weakly and flicks it like a weakling!. more rope climbs required! (watch ouit for the blisters though)

England v Ireland
If the game is anything like the european game of Reading v Cork (10-0) then i'm afraid that Ireland are in for a serious spanking!!!!

if you looked at the past results from the test series a few weeks back you will see that it is not the same. hopefully it will be close, i don't see any reason why Ireland can't grab a win. but i would say that!

Fair enough, i would have to admit that results between the 2 teams have been getting closer over recent years!!

Should be 3 quality games and its a shame i won't be able to see them. Will have to wait for your 'unbiased' opinion on the internationals and the performances of players from both sides!!

Well observer, i am surprised Peter Riley is able to take part in a hockey match, as if he has talked to you at any point in his life, the size of his head would not allow himm to play hockey. The bottom line is, if he is not good enough for England, he must certainly is not good enough for Ireland. Looks like you have to go and blow his trumpet elsewhere now!!!!

ENGLAND HAS AN IRISH COACH, IRELAND HAS SOMA SINGH .IRELAND HAS A GREAT OPPPERTUNITY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF A SITUATION.RONAN GORMLEY HAD ENGLAND SCHOOL TRIALS BEFORE HEADING BACK TO IRELAND.PETER PLAYED WITH HIM AT THE SAME SCHOOL.PERHAPS THE FOOTBALL SIDE SHOULD JUST PICK PLAYERS WHO PLAY IN IRELAND.AN OSTRICH BURIES HIS HEAD IN THE SAND IF THEY ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FINE BUT GIVE THEM A LOOK IS ALL I AM SAYING.GET THEM YOUNG AT UNDER 16 LEVEL.THERE ARE MORE OUT THERE THAN YOU REALISE.

Firstly its not true im off too Madrid- im off to Annadale. The coach wants me there to toughen up the defence and help that David Smith with his confidence crisis. I have also played against him many times and can recall easily beating him for pace and skill. How is that tooth of yours Smythy?! Get back to Loughborough is my advice.

People of Rome!
From what I hear, Ronaldiniho, Rooney and Beckham, Smyth has never been the same since he returned from Loughborough after a year of psychological and physical torture! Having been the subject of a near-death experience with a kerb-stone, several sunday-night headlocks, and a surprise meeting with 3 superheroes its not a bit of wonder he is mentally unsound! (Oh and i heard he only ever had a talent for climbing when he was dressed as spiderman....for a 70's night - cheers Maximus!) Anyhow all joking aside, he has been receiving councilling since his return and hopefully he will be well enough to watch 'Gladiator' and listen to 'Eye of the Tiger' from Rocky, without breaking out in a cold sweat in the near future!
Strength and Honour......Bleby for England!!
