With the view to bring the hockey world together and make it much stronger, the global ruling body of the sport the FIH, for the past few years has taken a number of important and useful initiatives and designed different programs actively involving the hockey playing nations around the globe to bridge the gap by sharing knowledge, information, expertise and ideas between them.
The two day Global Youth Marathon is another rightly targeted and well directed move by the FIH that will keep the whole hockey world on the move and on their toes on May 17th and 18th , 2003 when the marathon would be celebrated by organizing different events under the Theme of Exchange.
The Asian countries are all set to join the global hockey family in these two days marathon celebrations when different countries would be holding special programs and events to mark the celebrations .
Bangladesh NHA will organize a Marathon race on 17th May`03 at 8.30 hrs to be participated by 500 young players aged below 16 (sixteen) years and officials. Participants will be from Dhaka city and others districts. A National Youth Hockey Championship is also presently underway to celebrate Global Youth Hockey Festival`2003.
Japan would celebrate the occasion by organizing U-18 girls hockey league in Tokyo with 20 teams taking part at Keio University. Honk Kong is holding youth hockey events on the occasion that is being participated by 8 boys and five girls teams
The tiny Macau, has designed extensive programs that includes, a coaching session, display of skills by school children, Mini Hockey competition ,It will be festival of hockey as the event will welcome the families and other children.
The NHA of Oman has chalked out variety of events featuring a mini competition for different age groups, video session of major FIH hockey events, address by the OHA President explaining objectives of the marathon followed by prize distribution.
Malaysian is organizing FIRST OLYMPIC DREAM CAMP in Kuala Lumpur on 17th and 18th May, 2003, a joint venture of Malaysian NOC, National Sports Council and the Malaysian Hockey Federation. Young participants from various parts of the country aspiring to be Olympians with their parents would attend this two days camp. Lectures by experts and sport personalities on the following subject would be given:- a) Knowing yourself and your sport b) Ambassadors in track suit c) What makes a champion d) Sports Science for better performance e) Role of parents in sports
Pakistan Hockey Federation is celebrating the GYH Marathon in comprehensive manner by organizing two inter school events at Karachi and one at Lahore with 10 teams taking part in each. A league competition between four Pakistani junior outfits would also be held in Karachi. On May 17th and 18th , Lahore will be the center of attention where competitions to find best short corner, penalty stroke boy and best dribbler will take place followed by drawing, sketching and cartoon competition. To attract large number of boys and girls, free ice cream and edible stalls will be set up and attractive prizes are on offer.
In Singapore, on Saturday, 17 May 2003, the Delta Stadium will be filled with students from 10 to 16 years of age celebrating the Global Hockey Youth Marathon. This one-day event will see students from different schools pitting their skills against each other in the various fun-filled activities - skills test, street hockey, scavenger hunt and sports quiz. Prizes will be awarded to the deserving winners. There will also be free flow of ice cream and lollipops for all participants!
Similar activities are being organized in India, Sri Lanka, Iran, Philippine and Indonesia.
