Olympic gold and bronze
The highlight of the year was, without doubt, the highly successful Olympic Games held in Sydney. Our warmest congratulations go to the Netherlands HB on their team's magnificent success in winning the gold medal for men and the bronze medal for women. To win the men's gold at the Atlanta Olympics and again in Sydney is a truly magnificent achievement.
Congratulations also to the Netherlands and the Real Federacion Espanola de Hockey on winning the men's and women's European Nations Under 21 Cups. They, together with a number of other European teams, will now play in their respective World Cups in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Hobart, Australia.
The European HF was grateful to the Deutscher Hockey-Bund and the RF Espanola de Hockey for organising two great events.
General Assembly
The 17th EHF General Assembly and meetings will be held at Valetta (Malta) from June 7-10, 20001.
The EHF Executive Board met four times between Nov 99-Nov 00, the most recent meeting being in Bratislava in September 2000.
Lithuania's pitch completed
Because of the FIH/IOC pitch development programme, the Lithuanian Hockey Federation have been able to complete their AstroTurf field. It was used successfully for the 2nd Zonal Youth Trophy where girls from Lithuania and Russia played at Under 16 and Under 18 level.
Congratulations to the Slovak Hockey Federation on receiving one of the grants for 2000. We look forward to the successful completion of this project by the middle of 2001.
Free equipment
Several countries, including Finland, Bulgaria, Slovakia and Yugoslavia, have been given free equipment while Belarus has received extra sticks & balls. Lithuania and Slovakia, the countries laying down FIH/IOC pitches, have also received free equipment (50 balls and sticks, four sets of goalkeepers equipment and a coaching pack), to help promote their new surfaces.
The EHF have also been responsible for translating into Russian advice on umpiring, training and tactics.
Pavel Rosa dead
It is with deep regret and sadness that we learnt of the death of our dear friend and colleague Pavel Rosa of Slovakia at the age of 62 following a short illness.
Pavel was an Executive Board member of the EHF. As the Secretary General of the Slovakian Hockey Federation, his contribution to the Executive Board was immense. He fully understood the difficulties and problems that faced our new member associations. As a member of the EHF Development Committee, he was a very efficient zonal co-ordinator for his region. The recent granting to the Slovakian HF of an artificial hockey pitch would not have been possible without his tireless work.
It is worth recalling that, in 1980, he was the coach of the successful Czechoslovakian women's team, guiding them to a silver medal at the Moscow Olympic Games.
The hockey family extend our condolences to Rozalia, Pavel's wife, and his children, Boris, Igor and Petra.
