Artificial Pitch Project Gets Under Way

Punch & Judy's unbeaten run came to an end on Sunday when they were beaten by a solitary goal by The Athlete's Foot. This defeat meant that Punch & Judy had to postpone their League victory celebrations. One can hardly imagine them not taking one point from their remaining three matches. In the second game of the day The George Pub kept up their challenge for second place with a 1-0 victory over Pasta Poiatti.

Standings:

P W D L F A PTS
Punch & Judy Rabat 9 8 0 1 19 5 24
The George Pub 10 6 0 4 9 12 18
Young Stars 9 5 0 4 12 10 15
The Athlete's Foot 10 4 1 5 12 13 13
Pasta Poiatti 10 0 1 9 5 17 1

Top Scorers: 7 goals - Jonathan Seychell (Punch & Judy); 5 goals - Luke Busutill Leaver (The George Pub).

For a number of reasons this year's National League has moved along in fits and starts. However there shouldn't be any problems for the last three weekends. The games are now being played on the Hockey Complex's second pitch due to the fact that the main pitch has been dug up to make way for the laying of an artificial grass pitch. The completion of this project will be a dream comes true for all hockey enthusiasts. David Aguis, the Secretary of the Hockey Association (Malta), is hoping that season 2003/04 will see the local competitions being played on the new surface.

Back to Sunday's games and Punch & Judy faced a frustrating morning when they failed to find a way past a compact Sliema defence. The Athlete's Foot played one of their games of the season and their efforts were rewarded late in the second half when Liam Pace fired in a first time hit following a free hit from Michael Caruana Smith.

A goal three minutes into the second half from Luke Busutill Leaver saw The George Pub get the better of Pasta Poiatti and allowed them to move into solitary second place. For Busutill Leaver this was his fifth goal of the season and finally he seems to be showing his true potential as a goal scorer.

The League continues on Sunday with The Athlete's Foot facing Pasta Poiatti at 9.00am and leaders Punch & Judy up against Young Stars at 11.00am in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.

Respect
After hearing of the walkover that took place in the U/16 league of which would have effected the standings, the YS u / 14 were looking forward to it's forthcoming game against Vedala, at 1:00 on Sunday.
And here is where I begin. On the pitch playing between themselves were RabatYS, a team still seeking their first victory. They sure did recieve it as the team was given 3 points after that the opponents didn't bother to turn up!! After all the training they've gone through they were called up on a Sunday afternoon, to do what ??? Glance at the wonderful panorama ?
The worse was yet to come. YS presented itself with at least 10 players for the game. Their opponents consisted of FOUR players. Two players less and a coach missing. We couldn't believe it. We were dragged off our meals to play a half-team. This truly is a good one !!! I know that several teams in Malta find it hard to find players but a notice in advance is more than appropriate. The score is not worth mentioning. I do pity all those teams who turn up for matches and find a depleted side ready to play. The comments I recieved from beginners that play for Rabat/Ys were as follows. " Are these common, or what? " "Who's big idea was it to bring us here ?"
If this is the attitude newcomers will adopt hockey has no future here in Malta irrespective of any other factor.

Meanwhile prosit to the winners this weekend tal-kbar.

Meanwhile prosit lil-Ys u/14 for getting the much needed draw against San Anton 3-3. Even though I was not present I'm pretty sure it was a good game.
