The Olympic hockey venue for the 2004 Olympic Games at Athens is to be at existing airport which will be closed in March 2001 when the new airport is expected to be operational.
A synthetic training pitch – the first in Greece… - is to be installed in March, close to the Olympic Hockey Centre.
This was learnt after recent
meetings with representatives of ATHOC 2004 w2hich were held in Sydney and at Monaco during the GAISF Conference.
George Tsogas, the current president of the Hellenic Hockey Federation, has been appointed as Competitions Manager and he will have the assistance of an experienced hockey expert from outside Greece.
The FIH are aiding the Hellenic Hockey Federation in developing our sport in Greece. They have received coaching assistance from Niall Sturrock (SCO) and members of the FIH development and Coaching Committee while a first umpiring seminar was recently held in Athens.
2008 – Bidding Cities:
Five cities, Beijing, Istanbul, Osaka, Paris and Toronto, have sent their bidding-proposals for the 2008 Olympics to all international federations. The plans for Hockey are being carefully studied by FIH whose representatives will have visited all the sites in time to report their views to the International Olympic Committee by Hanuary 15th, 2001.
Els van Breda Vriesman, the FIH Honorary Secretary General, is a member of the IOC Evaluation Committee and will visit the five candidates in February and March.
The final decision as to which city will be awarded the 2000 Games will be taken by the International Olympic Committee at their next Congress, in Moscow on 13 July 2001.
