English hockey enjoyed a prolific day yesterday with the international women dispatching Wales 7-1 in Cardiff and the two club representatives earning bronze in Europe.
While an experimental England side were running Wales ragged in the last of a three-Test whitewash - won 14-1 on aggregrate - Slough's women were picking up their 10th European medal and Surbiton's men their first.
In addition, David Mathews, the former Canterbury striker, hit a hat-trick for Amsterdam in the European Cup-Winners' Cup final, while Surbiton's Ben Hawes was named player of the tournament.
England, despite introducing two new caps to a young squad, got better and better, culminating in a spell which brought three goals in as many minutes.
"We ran them off their feet and it was pleasing to improve with each match," said coach Tricia Heberle, who will also lead Great Britain when the home countries come together after September's European Nations Cup.
Six players scored, with Anne Panter and Isobel Palmer netting their first international goals. Helen Grant, Cathy Gilliat-Smith, with two, Imogen Robertson and Jo Ellis were the others. Liverpool Quilters' Jacqui Davies scored for Wales.
Slough put aside their disappointment of being edged out of the Cup-Winners' Cup final in Rotterdam by beating Club an der Alster, from Hamburg, to take bronze.
Jane Smith, from a corner, and Louise Bevan, from a corner rebound, secured the club's 10th medal - though they have never won gold. Rotterdam won the final with Grange, from Edinburgh, finishing fifth on penalties after a 1-1 draw with Slavia Praha, from the Czech Republic.
Surbiton overcame Poctowiec, from Poland, to clinch third place in Terrassa, Spain. Ivan Steen put them ahead after 10 minutes. The Poles levelled just before half-time, but Hawes restored the advantage and Steen made sure with six minutes left.
Mathews became the tournament's top scorer with his treble for Amsterdam, who clinched the title with a 4-2 win over Club an der Alster. He struck in the third and 45th minutes from open play and also added a first-half penalty stroke as England coach Dave Vinson watched from the stands.

surbiton
It is a shame that when Surbiton do well in a tournament that Clare does not want to write about it. With the quality of the top teams. Egara and Amsterdam both top of there leagues, and Alster with many internationals that in there second venture to europe not more is written.
Surbiton did indeed play well all tournament, though many tired legs in the last game. If indeed Surbiton were more clinical in fornt of goal they may of indeed made it to the final.
With Brett Garrard, Martin Dye and Ben Hawes were outstanding the whole time. Ben Hawes showed what international class he was getting player of the tournament. His finest moment was diving head first to stop a shot at the top of the D t, and 4 passes later Ivan Steen scores against the Polish to clinch the game.

Well done Hawesy and Pies! Good to see an English player getting player of the tournament (when was the alst time that happened!)- anyone see the games and know what position Ben Hawes played (he was moved around defence and midfield for England when they played Belgium)? Also, how did Dave Mathews play other than the goals - all round contribution etc (and how many did he he score in the tournament)?
Good report from CM here and glad to see that she was allowed a bit more space in the paper this time.

ben hawes played left half all competition. Pies didn't need to do much as the Oppo in their group were so bad. Only Poland touched them and then they were playing within themselves. He basically floated on left side of attack, and his teams mates rate him highly....they are 6 points clear in the dutch league and he has scored 24 goals....not bad for a guy with a dodgy hamstring and a few too many pasties touched away

dave matthews scored 11, but the Irish and the Swiss would struggle against Richmond or surbiton 3's.

Interesting that you say that the other teams in Amsterdam's group were so weak when the crossover games didn't seem to show this massive disparity. The Swiss drew 2-2 with Club Egara in the playoff game (lost on flicks) and Egara are certainly no pushover. Results just seem to show that Amsterdam were capable of scoring goals against everyone.

EX CANTERBURY!!!!!!!!!!
Great to see two ex canterbury players doing well on the European stage. I believe Matthews made it through a whole tounament - which is good news for England. More good news is that a young player like Hawes is being recognised ahead of establihed senior international players from europe. I wish them both luck in selection for England/GB, which surely will be forthcoming after such displays.
PS. where did Hawes play before Canterbury, don't remember him as a mighty Kent junior??

Claire Middleton doesn't give Surbiton or any other team in the men's game much copy because her interest seems to lie more in women's hockey

Dex you super-stud
Suspect the quantity or angles of Ms Middletons copy has little to do with her supposed preferences. As has been pointed out before Sports Editors dictate the space given to hockey not journalists. If you have an issue either way write to the Daily Telegraph. Anyway Reading & Cannock seem to get a pretty good go in the DT but then they actually play entertaining hockey.

Sorry all you club saddos ... as a non Slough, non Surbiton person, I'd rather read about how England are doing than be bored with details of a couple of piffling bronze medals.
When you get gold, I might be interested.

Terity and Sherlock
Terity - my comment has less to do with the amount of space, even though the volume of the Telegraph's coverage of hockey is very erratic, it has more to do with how it is used.
Sherlock - I'm not roycey, so what point are you trying to make?
