England women's 4-0 victory over Wales yesterday clinched their three-Test series with a game to play. They overcame improving opposition in Cardiff in their first outings since the World Cup last December.
A hat-trick from Clifton's Helen Grant had given England a 3-0 win in Cardiff on Saturday, though they looked rusty and allowed Wales four corners, plus one excellent chance which was saved brilliantly by Carolyn Reid in the England goal.
Yesterday's was a more commanding effort, however, with Cath Gilliat-Smith, Rachel Walsh and Rachel Walker getting the goals.
"We allowed Wales a couple of sniffs but it was a better performance," said coach Tricia Heberle. The sides meet again today.
Surbiton and Slough will both be playing for bronze today in their respective European Cup-Winners Cup competitions.
Surbiton's men defeated European champions Club an der Alster from Hamburg, 4-2 in Terrassa, to leapfrog Spanish hosts Egara, to whom they had lost on the opening day.
Matt Daly scored twice for Surbiton, with Ivan Steen and Tim Pinnock also getting on the scoresheet.
Slough, who needed a draw to reach the final in Rotterdam lost 1-0 to Grange Edinburgh, and were edged out of pole position in their pool on goal difference after Sintez Dzerjinsk, of Russia, thrashed Vilnius, of Lithuania, 10-0.
