The third round of the Hockey league got under way on Sunday and the two second placed sides, Young Stars and The George Pub both won their games to keep their slim hopes of catching runaway leaders Punch & Judy Rabat alive.

Standings:

P W D L F A PTS
Punch & Judy Rabat 8 8 0 0 19 4 24
Young Stars 9 5 0 4 12 10 15
The George Pub 9 5 0 4 8 12 15
The Athlete’s Foot 9 3 1 5 11 13 10
Pasta Poiatti 9 0 1 8 5 16 1

Leading scorers:

7 goals: Jonathan Seychell (Punch & Judy); 4 goals: Luke Busutill Leaver (The George Pub), Chris Bugeja (Young Stars).

In the first game Young Stars came back from a goal down to overcome Pasta Poiatti Qormi and maintain their joint second place. Pasta Poiatti took the lead through Sandro Bartolo but before the half was over, Chris Bugeja equalized for Young Stars.

In the second half another goal from Chris Bugeja and one from Ivan Magro ensured all three points for Young Stars in what was over all a deserved victory.

An early goal from Luke Busutill Leaver gave three important points to The George Pub in the fight for second place. This goal from their ex-player sent The Athlete’s Foot to their second consecutive defeat and this means they are now five points adrift from the runner up spot.

The first half was a balanced affair with both sides creating a number of chances and the goal from Busutill Leaver separating both sides. The second half saw The Athlete’s Foot press forward desperately in search of an equalizer but despite their almost non stop efforts they failed to score mainly due to the heroics of The George Pub goalkeeper, Galea.

The League will now pause for the Easter break. When it resumes on Sunday 27th April, The Athlete’s Foot will take on Punch & Judy Rabat while The George Pub face Pasta Poiatti Qormi.

I'm to finally see luke bl finding his form with 3 goals in the last 2 games. Next sunday should bring a good game for every one to watch. May the best team win.

I would also like point out the fact that it looks like the astro turf should soon. Thank you to all those people who made it possible.

The New Synthetic Turf
Despite a very long wait the turf will finally make it to Kordin. This is due to a lot of hard work by those very few who believed that the project is possible. The largest battle was obviously the funding, however one must point out that there were /and are many people in Hockey that didn't believe the project will materialize. We even had people ridiculing the idea even on this site. It’s a pity! However, with all the ups and downs, the project will materialize very soon thanks to a few people who worked for it and/or supported the project.

There is a bright future to Maltese Hockey in all senses. However we need a cultural shock. That is we have to pool all resources that are limited and work towards a common goal. It doesn’t matter if one was enthusiastic or not about the project, now its time to think seriously about the future.

Maltese Hockey is not in top form, and these situations happened before, it’s not new. However like in the past, there were people who single handedly kept Hockey "floating" like Dione Cassar & Gugu Tortell, and now it was David Agius who managed that, and everyone should be grateful to these gentleman.

The gist of all this is simple, Lets stop criticizing and start working, lets forget all the differences and team rivalries and start working together. We are going to have an asset that will help us improve Hockey, which is the common factor that brings us together. If Hockey improves, all will benefit. If we go down, we will go together.

Let’s hope for the best!

Dear Diary
I'm a player with Young Stars ( U/14 / U/16 ) and have been training with the team for the past few months now. It's a good team to be with, but this is not my issue. Here I'm going to recount the games of this year and conclude with what happened this week which turned out to be a complete farce.
October/November/ December - No games what so ever. U/i6 reach end of first round.
January/February - Two games played (Rabat/YS - Qormi )- Four postponed.
March - Trashing of San Anton ( 9-4 ). The english are over and this is what I want to comment about. Just arriving from school the team is dead tired. The result is 13-3 in our favour !! Three days later we play on the big. 2-2 the score. A week later we get to play against a selection of girls. The highest they managed was to reach the ball just beyond the 25-m-yard line ( theirs ). Orders from ref. Mix !!! What ?? After months of hard practice we are to mix with the opponent. And what opponents !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April - Games against hockeyhaus.de. 22nd April. The U/16 's are awaiting the arrival of the German cadets. We're a full team with the addition of some over-age players after hearing the results of the national teams. Surprise Surprise.!!! Who should turn up ?? A bunch of girls in pleated skirts, to our dismay!!!!!!!! The score 6-0 in our favour. The next day we get to play against yet another girls team. The score this time round is 12-0. Some opposition !!!! The next day San Pauli or something of the sort are expected to come. Behold !!!! SIX GIRL PLAYERS turn up!!!!!! Yet they still want to play on the eleven-a-side pitch. So we lend them six of our players !!!!!!! Everytime the ball headed their way, they broke into panic stricken screams. After all they were supposed to be the german champions. They were too tired after 10 minutes and we had to resort to the indoor pitch where we had to mix again!!!!!
Are we such beggars to only look forward to such level of play ?? Four consecutive games against foreign girls who barely know the basic rules of hockey. Do people think that it's against them that we'll impove our game. I think not. Not at all. Turf or without if this is the opposition available we don't stand a chance of raising our game.
Everyone was disgusted including coach and ref.
Now please try and view my opinion constructively rather than contradicting what is stated here. Thank you.

hockeyhaus.de
Please note that hockeyhaus.de was never expected to play against local Clubs and teh clubs knew about this beforehand. hockeyhaus.de is not a club nor a school but a hockey camp. The KTK Sport-Service informed us that they have players of high calibre thus they didn't want to play on gravel and that they intended to play very few matches during the 2 weeks.

Fortunately this year was very busy with touring sides and it was quite difficult to find dates to fit all the teams but David worked that out wonderfully. I hope that next year we will be having the same... but this time on Astro and maybe who knows... an Int. Easter tournament?

anyway... Happy Easter everyone

Opponents
Yes Max (i don't know who you are) you are right the foriegn teams that came to visit us were of very poor level! Trashing a team on the outdoor pitch 12-0 shows surely the level of our opponents.
The only positive factor that I see is that the under 14 and 16 players took some experience on the outdoor pitch.
But the opponents were very poor and I wished that we found some good teams to play against. We would have learned much more.
Lets hope that the teams that will visit us in the future will be of a much higher level.

Times
Why do U/14 matches have to be played at NOON and on SUNDAY ? Unlike other categories? And of all days, is it Sunday the chosen one? Couldn't the federation start the league in October like all others rather than in February? If the games continue at this rate all teams will end up with no players whatsoever due to exams and please don't think that players would risk their exams in order to play Sunday games in blasting heat. That I can assure you

Respect
After hearing of the walkover that took place in the U/16 league of which would have effected the standings, the YS u / 14 were looking forward to it's forthcoming game against Vedala, at 1:00 on Sunday.
And here is where I begin. On the pitch playing between themselves were RabatYS, a team still seeking their first victory. They sure did recieve it as the team was given 3 points after that the opponents didn't bother to turn up!! After all the training they've gone through they were called up on a Sunday afternoon, to do what ??? Glance at the wonderful panorama ?
The worse was yet to come. YS presented itself with at least 10 players for the game. Their opponents consisted of FOUR players. Two players less and a coach missing. We couldn't believe it. We were dragged off our meals to play a half-team. This truly is a good one !!! I know that several teams in Malta find it hard to find players but a notice in advance is more than appropriate. The score is not worth mentioning. I do pity all those teams who turn up for matches and find a depleted side ready to play. The comments I recieved from beginners that play for Rabat/Ys were as follows. " Are these common, or what? " "Who's big idea was it to bring us here ?"
If this is the attitude newcomers will adopt hockey has no future here in Malta irrespective of any other factor.
