forwards receiving
for a variation on this, have the striker run from the 22m line and call where he wants to receive (top, spot etc) the ball - good for developing skills at pace and quick release as well.

concept of man on man defence
i have a boys fist team and they concede and concede witch cost us almost all of out games. i am iplimenting a man on man structure with a sweeaper and his 3 backs. the thing is i cant seem to get thru to them on the concept of " iff the attacker dont get the ball he can do nothing". a problem i tend to pick up is they are ball watching allot.
any idees on how to consruct a solid defence, specialy the back 4. any idees, even a deviation from man on man
thank you vety much

Short pass
If they are only using the long pass...then as an opposing coach it would be very easy to anticipate your options. It is essential to incorporate small and long combinations to off set the opponents defense. I would utlize conditioned games in your training sessions that force or emphasize these restart options.
Analogy..If a pitcher in basball only throws fast balls, eventually he would become very easy to hit!
Ifhe incorporated change ups, curve balls etc... with his fast ball....he would become more effective and more difficult to hit!
Good luck,
Jeff

FH parent Undrestanding
Great Practices and drills . Now alot comes to light. While we waited these drills were purposeful. Dedication of players and coach are necessary for these to work in game situations.
These made corners SO exciting to watch.
Thanks for three years.

I am training a juniorteam (mixed) in Switzerland, age 14-16. I have found out that this shooting training is more effective if it happens in the circle an the player gets passes from diffrent spots in the circle.... it is very important to touch the ball only two times! and secondly: Make the people aware of that they should set their feets according to the ball...meaning ... if you set your feet properly you don't need to touch the ball more then 2 times! holding the stick short is also very important!

setting up on the field
what is your comment with setting up on the field? 3,3,3,1,1 or 4,2,3,1,1 or 2,4,3,1,1???
I have been using the 2,4,3,1,1 and I need some help with scoring and any suggestions for this set up. Also if you don't think high school level should set up this way and you think 3,3,3,1,1 would work better do you think that would be too confusing to change in the middle of the season?

systems
Cindy
be careful that you don't confuse the players with your various systems. With every system there comes alot of tactical changes. Where people need to be in defence for example.
keep it simple. Simpllcity is what hockey is all about.
If you can pass and trap 100% without missing, then you are on your way to having a damn good team. Without these necessary basic skills you can play all the systems you like and still not improve.
try spending more time on some simple passing drills and see where that gets you.

training help
Good Afternoon,
I am an avid reader of your site. All the training tips are wonderful.
However I am placed in an interesting situation. I've been ask to
captain a side of new hockey players. The competition is in 8 months and I
was wondering if there are any tactics or strategy to train my team.
The other teams are also in a similar situation, however some are in a
much better shape (technical wise). The format of the competition is a
9-a side 10 minute per half. The competition is in a league format
where we will play all teams (total of 6 teams including ours) in one day.
Any advise that you might have is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
and have a nice day.
