The hockey national league resumed after a three week stop with more of the same as Punch & Judy Rabat maintained their unbeaten run with a 3-2 win over The Athlete’s Foot. This weekend’s programme brought the curtain down on the second round. With each team still to play four matches each, Punch & Judy have built up a 12 point lead over second placed Young Stars and The George Pub. The worse that can happen is that they will have to play a decider. One point from their remaining matches will give the Championship to Rabat. With the League title all but decided an interesting battle is developing for the runner up spot. On Sunday The George Pub beat Pasta Poiatti Qormi 2-1 and joined Young Stars on the twelve-point mark.

P W D L F A PTS
Punch & Judy Rabat 8 8 0 0 19 4 24
Young Stars 8 4 0 4 9 9 12
The George Pub 8 4 0 4 7 12 12
The Athlete’s Foot 8 3 1 4 11 12 10
Pasta Poiatti 8 0 1 7 4 13 1

Two goals from Luke Busutill Leaver, one in each half, enabled The George Pub to overcome Pasta Poiatti and maintain their challenge for the second place. The combined presence of Branco Radojevic and Dejan Mihajlovic in The George Pub side certainly left its mark and Pasta Poiatti’s late reaction came to late and only resulted in one goal from Philip Magri.

The first round match between Punch & Judy and The Athlete’s Foot ended in 5-0 victory for the leaders. This time round The Athlete’s Foot put up a better fight although all in all it was a deserved victory for Rabat. League top scorer Jonathan Seychell opened the score to give his side a 1-0 half time lead; and at the start of the second half Charlot Antonelli doubled the score. The game turned slightly scrappy towards the end with some uncalled for and unnecessary bickering between some players. Baldacchino reduced the gap but Josef Antonelli scored Rabat’s third goal. Before the end Baldacchino got his second to make the final score 3-2.

The League continues on Sunday with the start of the third round and Punch & Judy will not be in action. At 9.00am Young Stars face Pasta Poiatti Qormi (1-0, 3-2) while at 11.00 The Athlete’s Foot play The George Pub (0-1, 4-1). If both Young Stars and The George Pub drop any points then Punch & Judy will be declared Champions.
