The Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) is please to announce that, in partnership with
The Ruparelia Group and the International Hockey Federation (FIH), an
agreement was signed yesterday Tuesday 25th March 2003 in Kampala by
representatives of all three partners relating to the installation of a synthetic hockey
pitch in Kampala.
The total estimated cost for the synthetic pitch project is approximately 460,000,000
(four hundred and sixty million) shillings, and it is planned that the construction work
will commence in June 2003 with a planned completion date of November 2003.
This project has been in progress since the International Hockey Federation awarded the
grant to the Uganda Hockey Association in November 2000, and with yesterday’s
confirmation of the involvement of The Ruparelia Group, the majority of the pieces of
the jigsaw are in place.
The Ruparelia Group, has been extremely supportive of the Uganda Hockey
Association development efforts over the past few years, during which time, the number
of participants in hockey has grown from less than 400 to the current 3,500+.
The involvement of The Ruparelia Group in the synthetic pitch project will allow an
international class hockey pitch to be constructed in Uganda, and will attract major
continental and other inter-nation events to take place in Uganda for the first time in
over 30 years.
It will also allow the Uganda Hockey Association to further expand the player base
through it’s on-going development programme, and by providing an attractive playing
surface for all ages and genders to learn and develop the latest hockey skills.
The Uganda Hockey Association wishes to express the thanks of all current and future
hockey players in Uganda for the generous support offered by The Ruparelia Group
towards this project, and assures our partners that the fruits of the future success of
hockey in Uganda and now beginning to bud, and will soon come to flower.
Mr Sudhir Ruparelia signed the agreement on behalf of The Ruparelia Group. Mr Theo
Ykema, FIH Executive Board member, and Chairman of the FIH Development & Coaching
Committee, signed the agreement on behalf of the FIH. Mr Arthur de Mello, Chairman of
UHA, signed the agreement on behalf of The Uganda Hockey Association.
