The Wanderers and RAU hockey teams are flying the flag for South Africa at the 2003 Africa Cup for Club Champions tournament which got underway at Pretoria Technikon on Monday.

The Wanderers men's side finished top of the national club competition and so qualified to take on Africa's strongest clubs in this annual tournament.

The RAU women were selected to compete after national club winners Natal Technikon were unable to make it.

Clubs from eight African countries have travelled to Pretoria to compete in the tournament, which finishes on Sunday.

Egyptian team Police Anan, the current men's African club champions, took their first step to defending their title by defeating Kenyan side Kisumu Simba 2-0 in the opening game of the competition on Monday.

And Wanderers couldn't have asked for a better start to their campaign, beating Exchequers from Ghana 4-2.

Both Police Anan and fellow Egyptian team El Sayadeen are expected to feature strongly in the competition, with a tough challenge coming from the South Africans and Exchequers.

Like their male counterparts, RAU got off to a similarly impressive start in the women's section, beating Ghana's Extinguishers 3-0 in their opening game.

They will be going all out to get the better of Kenya's defending champions Telkom Kenya, who yesterday recorded an emphatic 4-0 victory over Namibia's Unam.

"This should be a good test for the teams to see the standard of other African teams and to know what they will be up against at the All Africa Games," said Hockey SA chief executive Paul Richards.

It won't be club sides competing in the All Africa Games in Nigeria in October, but a general idea of what the rest of the continent is producing at club level will always be helpful.

Wanderers take on Zimbabwe's BAC at 7.30 tonight, while RAU's next game will be against Botswana's Gaborone on Wednesday at 3pm.
