Kampala
Uganda Hockey Association is please to announce that, with the assistance of Just
Hockey New Zealand and DHL Worldwide Express, a consignment of hockey sticks
has been received for use by the Schools Development Programme of the Association.
Just Hockey New Zealand introduced a programme to collect hockey sticks for Uganda
by offering to take a customer’s old stick when he or she purchased a new one. This was
so successful, that approximately 130 sticks were collected over a relatively short period
of time.
DHL Worldwide Express transported the hockey sticks – weighing in at around 100kgs
- from New Zealand to Uganda.
The hockey sticks are being distributed by the Association to a number of coaches,
whose role is to coach schools – both Primary and Secondary – as part of the Schools
Development Programme, which has seen the number of people playing hockey in
Uganda from 400 three years ago to the current 3,500+ today.
With such welcome assistance by Just Hockey New Zealand and DHL Worldwide
Express, Uganda Hockey Association will be able to continue and expand this
programme.
The General Secretary of the Uganda Olympic Committee, Mr Gabriel Oloka, was present
at the hand-over of the equipment by Mr Johan van Droogenbroeck, GM of DHL
Worldwide Express Uganda.
Mr van Droogenbroeck said that DHL Worldwide Express was pleased to assist in such a
worthwhile activity, and was amazed by the skills displayed by the youngsters in the
games being played in the Mini-Hockey League.
Mr Oloka expressed his admiration at the intuitive and enterprise shown by Uganda
Hockey Association in forging these international links, and hoped that the Association
would be successful in keeping these contacts going. He also stated that he was happy
to see the expansion of hockey in Uganda was continuing, with the school children being
such visible proof of the success of the Association over the past few years.
There were around 200 primary school children present at the equipment handover, who
were competing in Uganda Hockey Association’s annual Mini-Hockey League.
We wish to thank all of those who have assisted in this programme, and can assure you
that the equipment that you have provided will be put to the best possible use.
We must obviously thank those hockey players who kindly donated their sticks when
purchasing a new one at Just Hockey New Zealand.

Chairman, Uganda Hockey Association

A really nice gesture
This is an awesome gesture on the part of Just Hockey NZ and DHL. Hockey has always been a game of the poor. I'm sure this effort will one day bear fruit in the form of a formidable Ugandan hockey team. Good luck

hockey development initiative
as a retired hockey player it pleases me to see that efforts are being made to develop hockey in the east and central region by those blessed with generous heart.governments in these regions need to take a serious attension to the development of sports so as to see a positive growth in the the attitudes of the youth. being a kenyan a know that kenya hockey union has taken the hockey pleyers for a ride and these should not be the case as it scares off potential investor/developer for that matter. bravo ugandans and keep the spirit burning.thank you once again.
