Having lost almost a team's worth of players, Canterbury's National League Premier Division prospects did not look too promising at the start of the season.

Grant Edwards became their coach during a close season in which they lost Jon Evennet to Guildford, Richard Mantell to Reading, David Mathews to Amsterdam and Ben Hawes to Surbiton, all of whom have played for England.

In addition, Paul Wicken went to Loughborough University, Simon Ramsden to Cannock and Matt Lee to Teddington.

But Edwards is used to tough examinations. He has a PhD from Oxford University and lectures in agricultural science at Imperial College, London. A plant ecologist from New Zealand, he is used to promoting new growth and his team are healthily poised in mid-table.

The team is built around Trinidad's Kwan Browne but Edwards also paid tribute to Danny Laslett. "Danny is playing some of his best hockey and has helped hold things together," he said.

Laslett's wife Jackie, meanwhile, has helped the women's side move into second place in the National League table. But they face their toughest game of the season tomorrow against leaders Slough at Bisham Abbey. The men tackle Guildford on Sunday.

Starley is the best goalkeeper in the league and I also feel Stuart Keir must be close to an England call up,

Keir
EG played against Ashford in pre season Kier looked aweful we stuck 14 past him. He was an outstanding keeper, may have had a very off day when we played him but he looked very average. Shame

Keir Starley
Despite rumours that he quit the sport completely after leaving Canterbury, and set up his own Buddist colony in the mostt remote depths of Ramsgate, he has actually re-appeared. Fitter, more agile and looking a shadow of his former (over developed) self. East Grinstead is the mecca of hockey that have adopted this minstrel of the sport.

Can he reach his full potential and make it agian in the national league... watch this space.......................
