Leipzig, Germany ? The U.S. men?s indoor field hockey team outlasted New Zealand, 8-7, in penalty strokes to finish in 11th place at the inaugural FIH Indoor World Cup.

The U.S. fought back from a one goal deficit on four occasions in the second half, and used a Steve Danielson penalty stroke with three minutes remaining to tie the game at 5-5 in regulation time to send the game into the penalty strokes.

In the stroke competition, Pat Harris, Olaf Maack and Shawn Hindy connected on their attempts to earn the team?s first win of the tournament. Hindy, the 2002 U.S. Field Hockey Athlete of the Year, returned to the lineup to convert the decisive stroke after previously leaving the game with a hamstring injury.

The U.S. got on the scoreboard early on the first of three Danielson goals in the third minute of the play, but New Zealand responded with goals by Jason Bradley and Tama Jones to take a 2-1 halftime lead.

With both teams seeking their first win of the tournament, the two sides exchanged goals seven times in a see-saw second including five goals in the final frantic eight minutes of play.

In the men?s final scheduled for Sunday, Poland will take on the winner of Saturday?s late Germany-France game. The Germans entered the tournament as the Indoor World Cup favorite and cruised through pool play with a 5-0 record while outscoring opponents, 59-13.

Members of the U.S. team include Andrew Duncan, Pat Cota, Pat Harris, Jeremy Cook, Shawn Hindy, Olaf Maack, Steve Danielson, Peter Jones, Ryan Langford, Chris Terrebonne, Daniel Dion, Miland Tyburec. The team is coached by Scotland?s Billy McPherson.
