Leipzig, Germany ? The U.S. men?s indoor field hockey team will play New Zealand in the 11th/12th place game of the 1st FIH World Cup following a pair of pool play-ending losses to France and The Netherlands.

The U.S. men?s record dipped to 0-5 at the end of round-robin play following a 6-2 loss to France and an 11-1 defeat to The Netherlands. Poland topped the standings of Pool B with a 4-1 record and edged second-place France (4-1) by goal differential. The Netherlands (3-2) captured the number three spot in the pool followed by Australia (2-2-1), South Africa (1-3-1) and the USA. Poland will meet the second place team from Pool A (either Canada or Switzerland) while France will take on Pool A winner and tournament favorite Germany in the tournament semifinals. The Netherlands will play either Canada or Switzerland for 5th place, Australia will meet the Czech Republic for 7th place, South Africa will take on Russia for 9th place, and the USA/New Zealand match will determine the 11th place finisher.

Against France, Frederic Soyez scored four goals, including two in the first two minutes, to lead France to the 6-2 win. A painful reminder of the USA?s outdoor history with France, Soyez scored both France goals in a 2-1 outdoor victory at the 2001 World Cup Qualifying Tournament.

After the shaky start, the U.S. settled down to pull to within 2-1 at the halftime buzzer on Pat Harris? field second field goal of the tournament. France again struck quickly to open the second half with a pair of field goals by Soyez and Nicolas Gaillard at the 22-minute mark to open a 4-1 lead. The USA?s Steve Danielson scored his second goal of the tourney on a penalty corner with 12 minutes remaining in the game, but it was as close as the U.S. would get as Gaillard connected on a field goal and Soyez added a penalty stroke at the final horn to complete the scoring.

The game also marked the first tournament appearance for goalkeeper Milan Tyburec in the USA cage.

The USA likewise fell behind early in its match with the Netherlands as Roderick Weusthof scored on a penalty stroke in the second minute and added a penalty corner goal in the third minute to give The Netherlands a quick 2-0 lead. The USA?s Daniel Dion pulled the USA to within 2-1 with a field goal in the 10th minute, but the Netherlands closed out the first half with five goals in the final six minutes. Weusthof finished the game with four goals while Jeroen van Eijk and Richard de Snayer added two goals apiece for the Dutch.

Members of the U.S. team include Andrew Duncan, Pat Cota, Pat Harris, Jeremy Cook, Shawn Hindy, Olaf Maack, Steve Danielson, Peter Jones, Ryan Langford, Chris Terrebonne, Daniel Dion, Miland Tyburec. The team is coached by Scotland?s Billy McPherson.
