Both the Australian Women?s and Men?s Indoor Hockey teams recorded strong first round wins at the 1st Indoor World Cup in Leipzig, Germany, overnight.
Three goals to Gaye Kolsky and a second half double to Di Inderwisch was enough for the n Women as they ran away with the match in the final 10 minutes for a 7-3 win against Trinidad & Tobago.
The Australian Women began strongly with two goals, one each to Toni Cumpston and Kolsky, in the opening five minutes. Trinidad & Tobago fought back to level the scores after the half time break, before two goals to Inderwisch in the space of four minutes re-established Australia?s two-goal buffer.
Although Trinidad & Tobago reduced the margin in the 32nd minute, another three goals in the final seven minutes completed the scoring to give Australia second spot in Pool A.
The Australian Women play two matches on Day 2, against Czech Republic at 6.30 tonight (AEDT) and Germany at 4.30am tomorrow morning (AEDT). The Australian Men?s team had to rely on three goals in two minutes to defeat a determined French outfit by 5-3 in their first match.
In an even first half, both teams had a number of chances before Australia gained the ascendency to take a 2-1 lead into the break. Two goals at the 27-minute mark extended Australia?s lead to 4-1 before Mark Harris increased the margin two minutes later. Although France responded with two late goals, it wasn?t enough to overhaul their Pool B rivals.
The Australian Men also play two matches in a busy schedule on Day 2, against USA at 7.35pm tonight (AEDT) and Pool B leaders Poland at 1.10 am tomorrow morning (AEDT).
