FIH and Planetfieldhockey.com have renewed their partnership to produce match videos of every major FIH hockey event in 2003.

Enter the store here: www.offthecrossbar.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv

The partnership follows a pilot project during 2002, during which Planetfieldhockey.com produced video packages of the FIH Men?s and Women?s World Cups and Champions Trophies. The videos feature full-length match footage from the host broadcaster at each event. Prices are highly competitive at USD40 for four of the key matches on two VHS tapes, including the final. Packages will be available shortly after each event and advance orders are currently being taken for December 2002?s Women?s World Cup package.

The videos will be available exclusively from Planetfieldhockey, via the websites www.FIHockey.org and www.planetfieldhockey.com and also through a growing list of associated distributors.

FIH Hon Secretary General, Peter Cohen commented, "I?m very pleased that our partnership with Planetfieldhockey.com is to continue and be strengthened. FIH is prioritising putting hockey on the TV screen and making match videos of the world?s best hockey events available to hockey fans at competitive prices from a reputable retailer such as Planetfieldhockey.com is an important part of our strategy."

Hari Kant of Planetfieldhockey commented, "We?re very proud to be able to add this high-demand product to our existing range of merchandise at Planetfieldhockey.com and we are looking to build further our reputation for competitive prices and customer service throughout the hockey world."

A complete list of the video packages from all four 2002 tournaments, available in PAL and NTSC formats, and the proposed 2003 events, can be found on www.FIHockey.org and www.planetfieldhockey.com.

Hari,

I have seen some of the World Cup Matches, the video quality was good.
Can you guys also make the videos into VCD or DVD's please. I 'm sure that most people would like to have the space saving option as well all the other benefits that come with watching a DVD.

Thankyou for providing the Videos to the general public.

DVD's
Waismulla,

We are looking at producing DVD's for the 2003 FIH events. We are still trying to see what market demand is for these tapes. At present it only supports creating VHS copies of the matches. Once we determine that there is sufficient interest, we will be moving to DVD.

DVDs Please
It would be great to have the option of buying DVDs. What about a survey to establish the viability of this option.

Where is the list of 2003 FIH events?

Will the 2003 Indoor Hockey World Cup be one of the events offered?

Are all games videoed and offered?

2003 Events
The Major 2003 events that will offered:

2003 Men's Champions Trophy
2003 Women's Champions Trophy

Other 2003 events that will be offered if there is adequate TV coverage and demand:

2003 Indoor World Cup (The initial demand has been strong for this)
2003 Men's and Women's Champions Challenge

2004 Events

2004 Olympic Qualifier
2004 Men's Champions Trophy
2004 Women's Champions Trophy

It is not possible to offer all games in the video packages. A 12 team event consists of 42 matches. That would be over 50 hours of video coverage on over 20 tapes. This monster video set would be far too expensive. I'm afraid that demand is too small to sell the games in 'choose your own' packages. So for now we are looking at 4 games for each event. This will include the finals of course as well as other selected matches from the event. We will look at providing a way for the consumer to select the match which they would like included in the package.

We will look to move exclusively to DVD this year. However there is a large initial cost with mastering and creating the appropriate titles for a DVD. We have done an informal survey and the majority did prefer VHS, however this changes as there is more acceptance for DVD. In the end the sales will drive the decision to move to DVD.

Advice
Hari,

The quality of the video is good, however, I suggest you to put a good narrator to increase the emotion of the games !!! Certainly, it would give more emotion to the televiewer and increase the interesting for field hockey !!! I think field hockey could be more popular and be more well produced than it is, if FIH give more attention to these points.

Commentary
Good to hear that you feel the quality is good, we had some problems with the Men's World Cup tapes and I am much happier with the results from the subsequent tournaments.

The only event where there was no commentary was the Women's Champions Trophy. The Men's Champions Trophy has full English Commentary and although I haven't seen the final Women's World Cup tapes, they were produced with commentary from Steve Robillard, Wally Foreman, Nick Irvine, plus experts: Ric Charlesworth, Jenn Morris.

The FIH is very much aware that match commentary is important for the proper promotion of hockey. In fact they have just proposed to include English commentary for the Indoor World Cup medal matches specifically so that it will be on video.

Thanks for the quick answer, Hari, and it is nice to know that the Indoor World Cup medal matches will be on video. I saw the tape of India x Japan and Pak x Arg, of the last World Cup, and we only had the commentaries of Ric Charlesworth in this last game.

Field hockey is one of the most popular sport in the World, and I hope FIH promote it more and more. I still don't know how field hockey is so amateur in these days... For example, olympic ginastic and tennis is more practiced than field hockey, according to the last inquiry of IOC.

Highlights
In boiling a huge 12 tournament down to four matches, I believe it would be good marketing (and increase the demand) to include highlights from spectacular plays/goals from early round matches. It would make the overall tape much more exciting and widen the appeal well beyond the teams in the selected matches.

Indoor World Cup Videos.
Hari,
What do you think of the possibility of having 3 indoor games per tape (shorter games)? Also, will there be the same number of tapes available for men's and women's games, or is the number of tapes available the same per "competition"?

Pre-Orders
I don't wish to take pre-orders for the IWC until I can be sure that I can produce them. We do not know how many games we will package together and whether there will bewhat sort of quality they will be. This won't be determined until the end of the tournament.

Highlights
The FIH had produced a highlight package for previous years, however it did not sell very well. The cost of producing a highlights package is expensive as you have to do editing. We are not at the point where the demand supports this cost. Maybe soon.

In the meantime we will try to offer a variety of teams in the matches we choose.

Indoor World Cup
We still have to figure out what games will be televised from Leipzig. We do know that the semis and finals will be done for both Men's and Women's, so that is 4 games. That may be all that is available.

At this point the FIH is looking at providing English commentary for at least the medal matches.

As for packaging 3 games per tape, this is entirely possible. We may have the 5th, 3rd, and Gold medal games on one tape.

RE ; DVDS
The option for dvd has to be considered more viable i think from a coaching aspect. To be able to freeze-frame or slow-motion a move with complete clarity would be hugely useful in looking at things such as the backhand strike technique, or close stick skills.
Having bought most of the FIH highlights videos amongst many others i can't stress the frustration and having to rewind multiple times to clarify what i've just seen.
- Glad to hear i wasnt the only one with problems with my World Cup videos Hari!! Will be looking to order some more videos from yourselves soon.

More on commentary
I have just watched the video of the last day of the Men?s Champions Trophy (India vs. Pakistan for Bronze and Germany vs. Netherlands for Gold) and greatly enjoyed it.

Regarding the commentary, I found that it was a tremendous addition to the tapes. I am not sure who it was (not indicated in the tape, may be something to consider for next time), possibly Nick Irvine.

Anyway, it was a good support to the images, but not overwhelming, it was identifying the key players, and also clarifying some facts about the game or the Rules so it can help a non-expert audience better understand our game.

I would just like to praise everybody at PlanetFieldHockey at taking the initiative in making field hockey videos available to the general public. It's about time that someone took the initiative in marketing field hockey. Has anybody considered approaching FoxSportsworld in Canada or U.S. to encourage them to broadcast field hockey? Well done guys. Hopefully the more people who buy these videos will make them cheaper in the future.

All the matches are full matches. All but the Women's Champions Trophy include commentary in English. There are titles and graphics along with replays of goals etc. There are 4-6 camera angles for every match. The quality of production reflects the FIH's new standard for match coverage.

I'm afraid that I have discontinued the sale of the Men's World Cup matches. While some customers have been very happy, too many others have complained. I have fixed the problem with the duplication company for the other tournaments.

I will be looking at re-making the Men's World Cup tapes in the next couple of months. I will likely be packaging them as two tapes of four games similar to the other events of 2002.

Hari,
Any video or DVD would be great. The fact that we are able to have access to these games is wonderful.
Now, how do we get it on national t.v?
How come they have bowling or volleyball on ESPN but not the NCAA champioships?
Why couldn't ESPN pick up coverge of the U.S Womans team qualifier?
When young kids and their families can watch these games....we are off to the races here in the U.S.
Keep them coming!
Your efforts are appreciated!

Hockey Fan is so Right
Hockey Fan you are so right. For our sport here in the US it is almost a necessity to get the Final Four on ESPN. Maybe Planetfieldhockey, NFHCA and USFHA can join together in this campaign. Lets join the numbers of each organization's membership and the media of PFH to push this issue with ESPN. If every member of the NFHCA and the USFHA writes a letter, email or phones to ESPN they can ignore the issue. If ESPN televises the event than maybe PFH can also package that tape or DVD and sell it. Either way it is all about exposure for or sport. .

Hockey Damu,

At present we have no distributor in Africa. You can however order directly from our site at www.offthecrossbar.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv and we can ship to anywhere in the World. We have just started to create our distributor network and it will take some time to get local exposure in Africa.

IWC tapes and US distribution
Hari,
ESPN and Fox basically not interested in IWC, said they don't subscribe to Eurosport -but local TV stations in US COULD be persuaded to show highlights if the PR behind the 'pitch' is substantiated. By 'local TV' I mean local to the players hometowns and/or current living places. We have to start small to build the momentum for men's and women's hockey. And with Jane and Joe Public being so visual - the word will spread and interest could grow if we can plug these events on TV. Hockey Fan and Sportscenter junkie are correct in this.

HF & SCJ - I wrote to CNN and suggested that highlights would be a great feel good factor they could use as a footnote to their news broadcasts! Give it a try - make the same suggestion to Aaron Brown's email contact - Let's see what happens! They most certainly have the ability to pick up the Eurosport broadcast-so don't forget to mention it, please!

Hari, Would love to talk to you more about this. Am in Leipzig on the 4th, Marriott -
I need help to get this going - post reply here, or send private message, please -
And thank you for your efforts and skills!
