The Fiji women’s hockey team is improvising their preparation for this year’s Games in playing against the men’s open team in the Suva club league competition.

Divided in two teams Ruves and Latuis the girls fought hard during the games against the men’s team under the hot and windy condition in Suva yesterday.

Captain Allison Dutta said playing against a strong opposition they’re bettering their skill level and it helps the girls in getting the best out of them.

“The main thing is we try to have as many games as possible and playing the top five teams in the Suva competition really boost the overall team’s preparation towards the Games,” she said.

The twenty eight-member squad took one-week break during the festive seasons and are serious with their training commitments.

The girls smartly used the width and length of the pitch moving the ball in establishing their structural plays in order and able to put positive attacking set piece together.

Team coach Margaret Eastgate said that response from the girls with the limited resources they have was very encouraging.

“Lately we have been rewarding the girls with monthly golden athlete award based on their performance physically, technically and mentally,” said Eastgate.

Lucretia Smith was best so far in the team who have been consistence on her overall performance.

The Suva Games will be held over June 28 to July 12 this year.

The hockey side has been working on a training programme put together by the SDU.
