Olton and West Warwickshire, last season's winners of the English Women's Premiership and the new leaders of the English Women's League, were drawn yesterday against Fyffes Leicester in the third round of the English Women's Cup.

The two Midlands clubs met in the fourth round last season when Olton thrashed Leicester 7-1. "We didn't need reminding of that," said Chris Mayer, the Leicester coach, "It hurt as badly. At least we have the chance to put that right. Obviously, so early in the competition, we would have preferred non-league opposition."

The tie is due to be played on Nov 17. Both clubs will be without their England World Cup players who leave for Australia the day before. "We will be missing four, they lose two," said Mayer, "they have to be favourites but the pressure will be on them."

Olton took full advantage of the weekend postponements that affected their nearest rivals, to take a three point lead in the Premier League.

With the league going into the winter break on Saturday, because of the World Cup, they are now certain to head or be joint leaders when the league resumes in January. They beat Sutton Coldfield 6-1 on Saturday and Canterbury 3-1 on Sunday.

Although missing three first-choice defenders, they had purple patches in both games. England's Lucilla Wright was outstanding and looks to be coming into top form at the right time. "She has really upped her game," said Olton coach Kalbir Takher, "she is scoring and setting up goals."

Clifton are at home to Chelmsford in another premier clash in the cup. The other premier clubs look to have an easy ride into the fourth round even without their England players.

Hi...this is in the wrong comment place but that is crap about there only being one person watching! There was more like 10 watching! ANd olton yes they won and did well but Canterbury did haev loadsa chances adn did have olton on the back foot in the second half as they couldnt have got into the cnaterbury half more than 5 times... so my conclusion of the that article was totally inaccurate!

A National competition..... apart from the clifton game, is it not all regional....how random is the draw?

cup
very strange would agree with above comments. How is the draw decided? Too many coincidences for me! Why do the midlands get punished for having more national league teams in the top flight?

fyffes&olton cup clash
Come on people..........as if you believe leicester can beat the up&coming tallent of olton, which in a few years to come will take the national prem by storm!
There is no other team in the league that can compete with the fitness of the olton side & the looks for that matter. The coach aint that bad either!! Olton have beaten leicester 3 times consecutively with & without the international players. I cant say im a true olton supporter but i give them much respect, they are a top quality side its about time people accepted it.
All i have left to say is............Credit where credits due!

If the Leicester V Olton match was to be decided by who had the better looking coach, then Leicester would win hands down.

Chris Mayer would be delighted b y the last comment!
I would question the Olton comments, what the hell has looks got to do with it???
Maybe more in the england squad would be a better judge!

I think you are right, what have looks got to do with it, but on the other hand the charisma of the coach is all important, and on this count olton's coachs' win hands down...!!

I think the last few comments have rather strayed from the point but, ironically, also contribute to a debate around our game being taken seriously outside us hockey fans. The issue was the credibility of the draw in the Cup; clearly it is mathematically staggering for two ties to be identical in successive seasons but can that prompt us to query whether a fiddle is going on? That the debate then degenerates, this time into one about team looks and coach charisma, is typical of hockey chat rooms and makes us look bloody stupid (as well as blind and tasteless!).
As for the Fyffes Leicester v Olton game, we have four out plus our captain, the Irish fitness coach. Olton, who we respect greatly, are missing two internationals. We will be underdogs but will be giving it a go. Still can't help wondering about the Maths puzzle though....

Leicester were the better team on paper and on the day, wot a good looking striker they have, those pigtails turn me on! But oltons left half is an absolute stunner, lets be honest, the crowds were only there for those 2!! Oh baby!!
