STEFAN SALIGER, a gold medal-winner with the 1996 German Olympic team, scored two late goals to steer Surbiton to a dramatic 5-3 victory over Loughborough Students and into pole position ahead of Cannock and Reading on goal difference in the premier division yesterday.
But the students will be kicking themselves after throwing away a hard-earned three-goal lead inside 26 minutes. Bill Waugh, the former England and Great Britain midfield player, sparked Surbiton?s revival when he struck either side of the break with Ben Hawes also on target before Saliger showed his class.

It is rare to find two newcomers to the National League making an immediate impact but Bath Buccaneers and Bowdon have been in sparkling form in the second division this season. It took a last-gasp equaliser by Bobby Crutchley to help the West Country club snatch a point at Bowdon after Ian Wilson had given the hosts a first-half lead.

However, a hat-trick by Dharminder Singh for Nottingham in their comfortable 5-1 win away to Indian Gymkhana saw them move two points clear of the newly-promoted teams at the top.

After a tough weekend of double-header action for the women, Slough and Ipswich are locked at the head of the premier division. After a disappointing defeat away to Olton last week, Ipswich bounced back with notable wins over Clifton and Leicester to send out a warning to their rivals.

South Korea secured automatic qualification for the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 when they won the Asian Games title by beating India 4-3 in a thrilling match in Busan. The Indians had recovered from 3-0 down to level only for South Korea to snatch the winner.

For the first time in the history of the Asian Games, Pakistan finished without a medal, losing 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out to Malaysia in the bronze medal play-off after the teams had finished level 1-1 at full time.

Didn't the Dutch (not Germans) win the 96 Atlanta Games, with Spain second and Aus third?

AC is correct on the placings for 1996. Obviously an error on timings - Saliger did however win a gold medal with Germany in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

Stefan Salliger is not being paid to play, he is working in England. I believe the reporter meant gold in 1992, another oversite by a reporter with a clearly limited knowledge of the game.

Humour!
informer - don't be to arrogant about errors by the reporter when you can't even spell Saliger's name correctly!
