KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Hockey Federation (MHF) are looking at a RM2 million profit from the World Cup they hosted in March but the figure could increase once the income from the world television rights are collected.

The MHF are having problems closing the accounts as the International Hockey Federation (FIH) have yet to inform them on the amount they are to receive from the company dealing with the television rights, Octagon.

The MHF have already collected almost all the sponsorship money due locally, with Tenaga Nasional and Permanis making their payments last week.

The MHF are hoping the FIH will get matters settled by the time the BGM is held on Oct 26.

MHF secretary S. Satgunam said yesterday they have sent two letters to the FIH on the matter. He said the FIH are looking into the problem.

?We have finished the accounts as far as the local sponsorship is concerned. We are sure the profit margin will exceed the RM2 million mark,? he added.

The MHF will also be making a bid to host the Champions Challenge next year. Bids for the tournament have to be sent to the FIH by Sept 30.

?We just hosted the World Cup and the FIH are very much aware of our capabilities. So there is not much we can say on the matter. I do not see any problem in us hosting the Challenge next year,?? he added.

Malaysia also hosted the inaugural Champions Challenge last year. India were the original hosts but the tournament was moved to KL due to the tensions during the Afghanistan war.

The Challenge is a feeder tournament for the Champions Trophy. The other international tournament which Malaysia will host next year, is the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup in February.

Congratulation to the Malaysian Hockey Federation. A nice profit is a reflection of the management team of the event.

We attended and it was very well done in the best hockey stadium in the world.

Still, it was a wee bit warm.

It's nice to know this, if it's true, because we've had untold problems prior to the WC. No-one in Malaysia seemed interested especially since Malaysia's form going into the tournament was woeful (and I thought they could have promoted it far better). I think something like 70% of the tickets were not sold even a week before the opening match and the organisers had to cut ticket prices. Apparently, it was well attended so I'm please for my country.

phew..
yeah, big time. man, thought i was the only one who bought tickets for them..lotsa people attended it after they cut down the price, but its still not fair for those who've bought their tickets earlier, even someone posted up something in the newspapers, the tickets costs me 800 bucks, but it was worth it...

congrats to MHF...
but i still think the prices were too high. my sister and i bought the team passes where we attended every match of our fav. team. we spent like RM 600 each...tats just too much. we were silly enough to buy these tickets before the games even started. half way through the event...we found out tat the ticket prices were actually reduced to RM 16 then RM 9. We initially paid RM 40 per ticket...

You Malaysian miszcherry? I didn't actually attend it as I'm based in UK...managed to go for the 2 tournaments leading up to the WC though....which didn't give a good indication for the WC. England are not interested in hockay at all. They even turned down an opportunity to host the CT. There was barely if any at all any report on hockey in the papers here...had to surf the net for that.

ticket rip-off
the first thing that came thru my mind when i heard the MHF made a cool 2 mil was that they committed daylight robbery with the ticket prices!! no wonder they made so much money!! genuine fans had to pay astronomical ticket prices...hell, i spent abt 500-600 RM for the whole tourney, then they slashed the prices midway by more than half!!..so that the crowds will come...one glaring weakness was the opening ceremony which was a laughing stock...as only abt 200 people turned up..or was it less?? promotion was also really badd

It could have been better
The crowds significantly increased when the price went down. Had the ticket prices reduced earlier, the organiser would have more crowds from day one. And that ensure a high return from ticketing revenue(perhaps higher). If you understand economics you'll know this.
Very dissapointed for those who had sacrificed a lot for the earlier tickets on offer. Until now the ticketing organiser keep quiet about this. Maybe those who had bought the pricey ticket can claim for a refund.

England are interested
Iqbal we are interested in hockey but the broadcasters are not, and we did not turn down the chance of the CT it was due to the financial problems that it was decided that others should hold it in order to safe guard the tournament. Come and get involved in the National League etc come and see some premier league games and I am sure you will see we too are passionate about our hockey. I agree coverage of world hockey events is very poor here but we are working on it.

yeah,im malaysian. tho i think that the Malaysian team can go a lil further...but hey,im a big fan of netherlands and argentina for that matter and not even one of the two were in the finals, pretty dissapointed actually...and i actually took a few days off school(yea im still schooling) the watch the morning matches. the organizers should pay back our money, for those who bought their tickets earlier using credit cards... i went for all the tourney starting year 1998 cos that was when i started playing hockey. but hey, WC is still the best,i've got like 4 albums of some teams pictures...they all looked good.

Miszcherry: We have a few things in common....I'm a big fan of Holland too. I really wanted them to win this year's WC but I guess they've already had more than their fair share of trophies recently. 8th place isn't bad for Malaysia but then with a bit of luck you get the feeling that we could have been in the top 5 or 6. It's rare to see a real female sports fan in Malaysia, much less hockey so it's really nice to see people like you around.
DD: I am playing in for a local hockey team here...at least it's got my fitness up to a certain level...can't play too much though as I've a busy full time job here in Manchester. Perhaps the people involved in hockey are passionate but like you, I'm very disappointed with the coverage. There wasn't even a mention about England's progress in this year's WC...had to get it thru the internet and the teletext (had to really dig it up amongst the minor pages). I was gutted when England couldn't host next year's CT but I would be travelling to Amstelveen next year...hopefully the Orange retain it.

iqbal..
yea,i wanted holland to win the WC so much, but yeah, third place is not bad at all..and i got to meet the team. im going to holland end of this year to see some of my friends, might catch a few of the league games since its starting in october or november...wanna see a few friends in action. and they rocked in the recent CT. its not really rare to see a real female sports fan in Malaysia, there are thousands of them, but they're not really into the games, they are more into the players. and no doubt, im into some of the players too,but the game is much more interesting. thanx,im glad to be around.. since u're in Manchester, why dont you take a train and plane to holland and catch a few of their N.League..the NL league is the best league in the world, it should be fun to watch the best team play. watch out for Bloemendaal,Den Bosch and HCKZ...

jesrina..
i've got lotsa pictures of the argentinian team, holland, south africa, spain, malaysia, pakistan, india, south korea(im friends with the junior teams coach's daughter),japan...all of them i suppose, except for cuba and poland. didnt really gte a chance to meet them, even if i did,i wouldnt recognise any of them since they werent here for any tournaments before the world cup..

miszcherry: Going to Holland are you? cool....I must admit I don't know too much about club hockey but I'll take time to watch it sometime. Teun De Nooijer is my favourite player...he's so slick. By the way, are you a national player? Our women had a bit of a hard time in the Commonwealth Games but I don't really blame them. I thought our men should have been there instead, with all due respect. Maybe you can send me some of the pics you have with the Holland team...I managed to get one of the jerseys...I don't think they sell them anywhere so I really treasure it....my email iqbal_rizal@yahoo.co.uk...:)

yeah,i go to holland every year. my aunt is living there. cool...so,Teun De Nooijer is your favourite player? Mine would be Taeke Taekema,Matthijs Brouwer,De Nooijer and some other talented players as well. I dont know much about the clubs either but I do have some friends who plays in the league. I know a lil something about the clubs and some players. And no,Im not a national player,I'd be a bit..erm..ashamed of myself if I'm in the national squad. No offense, but they couldnt even score a goal!!! yeah, the mens team should've gone for the competition. Im really sorry, but I dont have a scanner,so I couldnt send the pics. My scanner's a bummer. The pics would turn out black and white if i scan them,so i plugged it off. I got some other team's jersey but not Holland's. They wouldnt give it out :( Was kinda sad.. But the next time they're here,Im pretty sure I'd get one cos someone promised.. :)

jesrina..
no biggie. im always online. im sorry, but my exam's next week and there's no way my mum would let me out. But if you really want to see the pics, there's this friend of mine, she's 16 as well, but i dont see her often eventhough we go to the same school, she's really close to the Pakistanis and Spaniard. She has got tons of pictures of the team and if you want, just this message and i could arrange a lil something for the two of you(her mum's not that strict about her going out).

miszcherry: I've been to Holland several times myself....Amsterdam is like my second city :) But I go there mainly to watch football. I have some Orange blood in me I guess...I tend to support anything Holland even if I was born in Belgium. By the way, if you ever end up in UK for some reason, you could give me a buzz and I could show you around a little :) Same goes to you Jesrina.
