PlanetFieldHockey talked last week to veteran USA midfielder and Captain Tracey Fuchs. Fuchs recently led her national team to victory over India and qualification for the 2002 World Cup. The US Captain scored on her longevity, her love of the game and what she believes about teamwork.
Name: Tracey Fuchs
Games for USA: 223
Number: 9
Position: Midfield
Andrew Griffiths (PlanetFieldHockey): How long have you competed for the USA?
Tracey Fuchs: I have competed since 1987 for the national team and started with the under 21 team in 1984.
AG: When was your first game and against whom?
TF: I am not sure, but I think my first game was against Holland in Holland. It was a long time ago!
AG: What do you remember about your first game?
TF: I remember that Boud (our Dutch coach) was trying to tell me that I got my first cap and I thought he was saying I made my first cut!
AG: What keeps you motivated to keep playing and competing at the highest level?
TF: Definitely my teammates. Each and every one adds something different to our team.
Also the game is changing so much. Since the Atlanta Olympics, there have been so many changes and it is still so challenging both physically and tactically along with so many more skills being introduced.
AG: You have seen a lot of players come and go from the team over the years. What have you learned from your teammates?
TF: That everyone has such an important role whether you are a starter or # 16. Everyone is equally important and these days, you need everyone to be successful.
AG: How difficult was it to keep focus throughout all the postponements/cancellations during the qualification process?
TF: It was really, really difficult. Not only do we have many New Yorkers and players affected by Sept. 11th, but all the postponements were really difficult, because it was really difficult to stay at a 'peak level' for 10 months. We all missed a lot, from the holidays with our families because we needed to be back in Virginia Beach, to our teammate's wedding. We just tried to keep focused on the series and knew we had to play before November! It became amusing after the first few months of changes and it was definitely worth it. The good thing was that we got Jill Reeve back, who blew out her ACL and came back 3 months and 10 days later. Amazing really!
AG: Was there anything specific that helped you along the way?
TF: Watching the grief that the family members of the WTC are going through, we knew that it was our way to fight for our country and do something really good for usa hockey. We wanted to go in and play well, and everything out there
AG: Were there a lot of nerves before the deciding final game?
TF: I think there were nerves before each game, but I think both teams were nervous before game 3.
AG: Did you do anything as captain at half-time to turn things around, being down a goal?
TF: You know, we were down a goal, but really we were playing alright, so I knew we were right in the game. After we scored the first goal 1 minute in, we really started to click. I think I just tried to reassure everyone, that we were ok, and not to stray to far off, of what we needed to do.
AG: Your personal performance was excellent at the qualifier - did you feel like
you wanted to prove a point?
TF: Thanks, I never really felt that I had to prove a point. For me, it was all about the team and how much time and energy we had put into this series. We knew if everyone played good… not necessarily great, that we would be successful, and that is exactly what happened in game 3. There were some unbelievable performances by everyone, and that is why we our going to Perth.
AG: Your head coach has said that your team are not the most skilled team in the world, but a strong TEAM, and very determined - do you think this is an accurate reflection of your group?
TF: I think that we are a very dedicated group of players who work really hard at what we do. (like most teams I would imagine!) We don't grow up playing one sport, so we aren't going to be the most skilled, as we get a later start and don't usually play year round till college. We are working hard to improve our skills, and keeping the American spirit as well!
AG: What is your build-up like for the WC?
TF: Well, we finally had some time off… We will do a promotional tour against some college sides, and then we have a 4-nation here in Virginia Beach with Ireland, Scotland and Mexico. I am sure we will go over to Australia pretty early as well, so that we will be prepared for Perth.
AG: What do you feel the team's chances are at the World Cup?
TF: Our pool includes Holland, Australia, South Africa, Japan, Spain, Ireland and England. Hopefully we will do well. Anything can happen during a tournament, so we need to prepare for each team and work really hard in the next 3 months!

answering the critics
Tracey took some heat on this site a while back - then answered her critics with 4 goals at the WC Qualifying series - a good way to answer any criticism thrown her way. Experience goes a long way in our sport...

...when it counts
Qualifier is one thing, although I remember a "no show" during the '99 pan ams or Olympic Qalifier. Well done for her on this outing.
I'd like to know if she has ever showed up when it gets important....but, I guess one has to go back allll the way to Utrecht '98 and Atlanta '96 since she and/or team has competed in anything significant. 2 questions: How did she perform then, and what was her contribution to the surprising bronze in Dublin.

to more heat - I can't figure you out - do I detect sour grapes when you use the word "no show" - and more heat. You should only have been that dedicated and have worked as hard (at anything) as she has. Want to know the contrib - to the surprising bronze in Dublin - how about a beautiful goal in the last game. USA is a team, win or lose - wake up and you won't have to ask "2" questions. bye kiddo.

...can't take it - usa is so defensive!
a lot of people have her dedication....we are talking about skills.
i am only being realistic, not slamming, and wanted to understand her contribution during significant competitions. i offered credit, then told you she was a no show at an event where i watched. what's wrong with that? i would pick usa to play for the wodden spoon in the wc. it's an obvious pick and probably pays a dollar on the dollar with book keepers.

To those who would doubt America's resolve:
ALL HAIL TRACEY FUCHS!
Note what she did in the second half of the third game of the India series, when our backs were against the wall.
Note how many caps she has, how many telling goals she has.
We need to place her in the pantheon of the No. 9s of American women's sport: Lisa Leslie, Mia Hamm.
Win us a Cup! Vamos, Estados Unidos!

sorry usa...
well, the american spirit can only take you so far...unfortunately, i predict the team usa will finish between 6-8, if they can beat south africa and ireland...not enought to get them through crossovers...best of luck anyways, and take the time to enjoy the aussie sun!

Thank you hockey fan for the generous placement. If we finished 6 in the pool that would be an improvement. I can onyl hope that the overall finish in the top ten would help lift the spirits here. There is a cloud of negativity hanging over US field hockey, at least on the womens side. I know that defensively we will be competitive in the games. I hope that with the residency program in the second year that the offense will click, we need to average more than a goal a game to compete in the elite ranks. Anyway it was nice to see the Indian result in the CG's. I hope that means the US is that much better than the current ranking shows. And to add a comment on the original idea, Tracey Fuchs is the best hockey player we have. If everyone had the same passion and commitment to the sport the US would be a powerhouse. But, players like Tracey only seem to come along every 20 years or so. I hope her leadership can take us back to an olympics this time.

USA team
I would say that the situation is like this:
On a good day, when everything clicks, the USA can beat anybody. However, since it is very unlikely that they will have more than one or two of those days, they will most likely end up somewhere between 7th and 12th place......, which is basically where they belong.

PASSION AND COMMITMENT
TO MR REALITY/AND USA TYPE TALK,
OBVIOUSLY,YOU HAVENT MET SOME OF THE GIRLS ON THE USA TEAM,
THE PROBLEM DOESNT LIE W/PASSION AND COMMITMENT, MOST OF THEM HAVE GIVEN 8 YEARS + OF THEYRE WORKING LIVES TO COMPETE AND ACHIEVE A PERSONAL/TEAM GOAL,WHAT DO YOU CALL THAT? I KNOW OTHERS THAT GIVE THEYRE ALL..LIKE TRACEY, (WHO IS A GREAT EXAMPLE TO THEM) THERE ARE MANY WHO DESERVE CREDIT FOR THEYRE PASSION/COMMITMENT/SKILLS AND ARE ON THE TEAM TODAY!!!!! DONT PASS JUDGEMENT,JUST ASK TRACEY!!!!

I remember Tracy as one of my Tiggers at UCONN field hockey camp coaching with Lauren and Miss Wright. I am so happy to see her successful in field hockey and in the game of life. GOOD LUCK TO HER AND THE REST OF THE TEAM !!

Go USA!
I was lucky enough to watch the world cup qualifier against India in my home town and got to speak to many of the usa team after the final game. And i must admit that they have become a source of inspiration to me and many of my friends after watching them play. They showed an immense level of skill and did not lose heart throughout the games and in the end they won the day.
so come on Tracey led the USA onto bigger and better things!

its encouraging to see tracey out there playing in so many games and as hard as she does... im glad she also pointed out that, (unfortunately), US players dont usually get the opportunity to play fh at an earlier age. i wish that there were more opportunities for elementary age play when i was younger, rather than having to settle with playing later in high school. its sad really... we need more development of this sport in the US to really have a distinct edge in future competition. but one thing seems certain, we do have a lot of heart and i think fuchs is a great example of that.
