Purpose

The purpose of this game is to emphasize the importance of getting back on defense, providing proper pressure and cover, defensive organization with the goalie and attack transition.

Organization

Mark off the playing area 40 x 40 yards with 2 goals. Divide your players into 2 teams. Identify a circle area/scoring area. Include a goalie at either end. Each team will begin in a 3 v 3 situation.

Procedure

1. Identify a team to begin with possession. This team will initiate the attack towards the opposing teams goal by playing possession hockey and looking for the penetrating pass. Effective off the ball movement is essential due to the equal numbers. The team is possession will play percentage hockey until they are within the attacking third. The opposing team attempts to regain possession.

2. Stipulations # 1:
The team that loses possession must sprint back and touch their goal posts before they can defend.

Stipulation # 2:
The team that won possession must make 4 consecutive passes of over 10 yards each to 3 different players before they can transition for attack.

3. The game continues in this fashion for a specific time period or goal production.

4. Keep track of points with incentives:
Losing team buys ice cream or water ice!

Key Points

1. Recognize/ anticipate the transition to defense.

2. Listen and communicate with short, directive words of organization.

3. Never chase. Drop, shift, cover and mark for the defending unit.

4. Goalies are the first set of eyes on the recovery, be alert and specific in your directives.

5.On attack use 1 touch passing. Look for penetrating pass after the completion of the 4. If the penetrating pass is not an option....keep possession!

Variations

1. Modify the numbers and size.

2. Allow the 1 defensive player who lost possession to remain and go high pressure defense against the attack players.

3. Add a stipulation where if a goal is scored that team will lose a player. This will continue until the one team has no players remaining.

Have fun!
Jeff

I think this drill is well explained and well organized. Pictures don't always make it easier... sometimes it's more confusing! I like the stipulations and key points. Sounds great! I hope to try it in the near future!
