Separation of Countries
The recent international tournaments should have certainly gone a long way to settling the almost forgotten dispute over whether Ireland or Lithuania should have qualified for the Womens World Cup in Perth.
Both countries have recently had the luxury of hosting their respective European Cup Qualifying tournaments yet with quite remarkably differing fortunes.
From the results the Irish have demonstrated that they deserved their palce among the world's best by scoring 23 goals and only conceding 1 over the course of the tournament. Now I know the critics will come out and say but look who they were playing etc etc, and that just emphasises my point further that teh Irish Womens team (and now being followed by the Men's squad) are no longer a team of hopefuls, but are making that leap from the 'second' division of international hockey to the 'premier' league.
Long may it continue. They have worked hard to achieve this success and having seen the results from last weekend there must be a few teams who are going to Perth who are seriously considering the Irish as a threat. Look out Spain, USA, England, the Irish are coming and after a few more months of serious training will be a force to be reckoned with.
Goodbye Lithuania, your flash in the pan demonstration in France last year has been shown to be just that. I am sure you will continue to develop and will once again challenge top teams but 2002 belongs to the Green.
See ya all in Perth.;)
