My name is Steven Wallis and I am now working in Brunei (Borneo). I coach an expatriate team that plays against the Bruneian National squad once a week and was recently asked if I could suggest a contact or a name to help the Brunei Hockey Association find a new National Coach and Junior Development Co-ordinator. Recent candidates (from Korea and Pakistan) have both recently withdrawn applications leaving Brunei 'coachless' for almost a year now.

Brief Job Description:

The Ministry for Youth, Recreation & Sport require a male, Level 2 coach (or higher). The pay begins at $3200/month (some negotiation may be possible here depending on qualifications & experience) + $400/month travelling expenses and an additional month's pay is awarded at the end of each year, all tax free. The initial contract is for 2 years and includes free medical & housing.

An Australian, Mark Rutter, was coaching here for a number of years and is now coaching in Canberra. Interested parties may like to try and contact him to gain a greater insight into the pros and cons of the job. I can also provide some idea of the living conditions here.

My phone/fax number is +673 2 341098

Regards, Steven Wallis

Real Challenge
This advert is over 4 years old and I have doubts that there is any need for a coach there at present.

It is one hell of a place to work in Hockey.

There are only a handful of teams and only one or two players are really of any significant standard at all but all are very lazy and unused to change. If you are not South East Asian and Muslim you will also struggle.

If you have aspirations of being part of a functioning and effective program go somewhere else. Better off getting a job teaching in an international school there and getting paid well to do very little work.
