IPOH: Penang Free School continued their strong charge in the Champions Schools hockey tournament when they crushed St Andrew of Johor 7-1 in a Group A match at the Azlan Shah Stadium here yesterday.
The Islanders had in their opening match on Monday whipped Puchong Perdana of Selangor 5-1.
Yesterday, the Frees again proved too powerful for their opponents and started the scoring as early as the eighth minute through Annas Bastomi.
With Johor hardly a threat to the Penangites, the Frees' Mohsin Hamsani scored two more in the 19th and 31st minutes for a comfortable 3-0 lead at half-time.
The Frees then stepped up a gear and Annas was on target again for his second goal and his team's fourth in the 41st minute.
Yamin Yusof (52nd and 59th) and Jabir Abdul Rahman (54th) made it 7-0 before Johor finally got a consolation goal through Shuklur in the 65th minute.
In another Group A match, Selangor's Puchong Perdana produced another dismal performance as they fell 5-0 to defending champions Sains Tengku Mohamed Faris Petra of Kelantan.
The Selangor side could only offer token resistance against the title holders, who were still smarting from their shock 2-0 defeat by St David's of Malacca in the opening match.
Kelantan, who needed to win to stay back in the running for a semi-final berth, netted their goals through Ali Abdullah (11th and 17th), Ahmad Azrem Azmi (12th) and Zamzuhairi Abdul Wahab (56th and 62nd).
In the morning, minnows Khir Johari Sungai Petani of Kedah upset Negri Sembilan's Datuk Ahmad Taha Gemencheh 2-1 in a Group B match.
The Negri side, who were third in the 1999 tournament, had been expected to chalk up their second win in as many outings especially after their 3-1 opening victory over Padang Midin of Terengganu on Monday.
However, the schoolboys from Gemencheh were given a rude shock when Kedah took the game to them, especially in the second half.
The Kedahans went ahead in the 37th minute through Nur Zam Zam Ramly and Shahedan Taib doubled the score in the 55th.
Zaharudin Janhari pulled one back off a penalty corner in the 57th minute and Negri went looking for the equaliser. But the Kedah defence stood firm.
Padang Midin, meanwhile, scored a goal in each half for a 2-0 win over Armed Forces, represented by Perintis Pertukangan Tentera Laut, to stay in the hunt for a semi-final place from Group B.
