On May 4th and 5th, it took place in Rio de Janeiro the first two rounds of the Brazilian 7 a Side tournament, the first official games of the 2002 National Hockey Season.

In the first day, after the Under-18 and the Women's game, the returning champs Germania played against 99 National Champs SPAC. Right after halftime, when SPAC was leading 1-0 thanks to a quick shot by Rafael, Germania, with scores by Osmar and Caldinhas, took the lead. They could have taken the game out of range if it wasn't for two missed penalty strokes by Caldinhas and Ruivo. And they payed for it. Two minutes before the end, a hard shot by Beto crossed the Germania area and found Rodrigo, who had no hard time scoring to give the game final figures at 2-2. The second game was between the young team of Macau and the experient Rio Hóquei team. It was a very hard played game and, in the end, the 1-1 tie was a nice result to both teams. Andie and Denis scored the goals. The last game of the day, a battle between Clube da Aeronáutica, led by former Germania players like Leo and Belloni, and Interlagos, with Ariel and Marcel in great shape, was marked by disciplinary problems from the team from Rio. Leo got a yellow card 13 minutes into the second half and, after the first goal by Ariel, Belloni was shown the same card, leaving the team short-handed with only 5 players during 2 minutes, when Ariel also got a yellow. But no team scored when having more players. And, almost at the end, Marcel scored for Interlagos. The final score was 2-0.

On Sunday, Germania and Interlagos played a great game. Osmar opened the score for Germania, but Ariel tied it in a penalty stroke. But the
returning champs were ahead 3-1 before halftime. In the second half, they would extend the lead to 5-1 before Ariel brought Interlagos back in the game with two scores on penalty strokes. But Germania would hold the score from then on, and the game ended 5-3. In the second game, SPAC, trying to get on top in the standings, easily beat Rio Hóquei 6-2, with a good performance by Beto and Rodrigo. In the last game of the day, Clube da Aeronáutica tried to erase the poor performance in the previous day by beating Macau 5-0.

Germania and SPAC are on top of the standings, with SPAC two goals ahead in the goal difference, with 4 points. Interlagos and Clube da Aeronáutica have 3 points, with Rio Hóquei and Macau having 1. The next rounds will be played on May 18th and 19th.

Re: Brazilian Under 18
Noah,
I confess I have no idea who is this "latin player". Actually we would like to play overseas, but the truth is our teams just might not be ready yet. We are already teaching field hockey in some schools but, as of right now, we only have about 50 players under-18, so we think it would be better to wait until next year.
But please keep us informed about any tournament the Brazilian teams could play in.
And if you want to know anything else regarding Brazilian hockey, please ask and I would be glad to inform.
