After a very good 2001 season, where there were a lot of well organized championships in the country, Brazilian Hockey gets ready to start its 2002 season.
The season has already started for the National Team, which played in the I Pan American Indoor Tournament, taking 5th Place and getting recognition as the most surprising team in the tournament. But now it is time for the Nationals. The first championships to be played are the Under-18, the Women's and Men's 7 a Side. They all start on May 4th and go on until June 9th.
There will be six teams in the Men's Tournament. Germania, looking for a repeat, Clube da Aeronáutica, in its first season, and Rio Hóquei, who, after a few seasons, built back its team and now looks to bring back the archirivalry against National Champs Germania, from Rio; Interlagos, coming from a good season in 2001, when they went to the Brazilian 7 a Side and National Indoor finals, SPAC, hoping to be back as the top team from São Paulo, and Casa de Macau, a young though very talented team, from São Paulo.
The tournament starts this weekend, May 4th and 5th, with the first and
second round, in Rio de Janeiro. For the first time, the highlights might be showed on national TV, which already shows some of what was accomplished after a well organized season.
Germania, coming back back from a perfect season, are still the favorites, but all the other teams look a lot better than they did last year and will be eager to take the top spot from the two time National Champions. SPAC, Interlagos and Clube da Aeronáutica look specially strong, but it will also be fun to watch a game against Rio Hóquei after so much time and the young team of Casa de Macau.
Let the games begin !
