IPOH: Defending champions Sains Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra of Kelantan crashed to a shock 0-3 defeat by unheralded St David's of Malacca in their opening Group A match of the Champions Schools hockey tournament at the Azlan Shah Stadium here yesterday.
The Kelantan side found themselves trailing by a goal after they conceded a sixth minute penalty corner, which was converted by Wan Nor Hisham Wan Jusoh.
St David's stretched their lead in the 57th minute off a quick counter attack and Muzaffar Zakaria found the target from the top of the D.
Nor Ikram Sulaiman sealed victory for the Malacca side in the 59th minute.
Ipoh's Anderson notched a 2-0 win over Sungei Petani's Khir Johari in a rain interrupted Group B match.
Anderson had gone in front by two goals through Nor Azizan Abdul Rani (third minute) and Azril Naswan Abdullah (26th) when play was halted four minutes into the second half.
In another Group A match, Penang Free School whipped Puchong Perdana of Selangor 5-1.
The scorers for Free School were Yamin Yusof (ninth, 48th), Ahmad Hasbi Abdul Latib (10th), R. Gopinath (33rd), Mohsin Hamsani (50th).
Puchong Perdana's Nasiruddin Jabbar scored the only goal in the 42nd minute.

Group B: Datuk Mohamad Taha (Nse) 3 Padang Midin (Ter) 1, Khir Johari (Ked) 0 Anderson (Prk) 2.

Group A: Selangor vs Kelantan (4pm); Penang vs Johor (6pm).
Group B: Kedah vs Negri Sembilan (7.45am); Armed Forces vs Terengganu (9.30am).
