The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has been awarded an International Olympic Committee (IOC) Women and Sport Achievement Diploma this year, in recognition of its contribution to the promotion of women in sport.

The diploma is a tribute to this year’s 44 nominees for the IOC Women and Sport Trophy awards, held annually since 2000. The FIH nomination for the Women and Sport Trophy 2002 highlights the fact that the FIH is the most gender balanced Olympic Hockey Federation. The FIH has far exceeded the IOC's Women and Sport Working Group's goal for the representation of women in the Executive Boards of International Olympic Federations. In addition the FIH elected its first female president, Mrs Els van Breda Vriesman in April 2001.

FIH President Els Van Breda Vriesman comments, “The IOC Diploma recognises the achievements that the FIH has made in ensuring that its top level administration reflects the sport’s strength in participation from both genders.”

The Malaysian Women’s Hockey Association won the Asia Women and Sport Trophy 2001 for its excellent work throughout Malaysia and the Asian region. The IOC stated in its news release at the time, “Women involved in hockey have been the pioneers of women’s sport since the 1920’s.”

Top work hockey! As an ex hockey player, and now administrator (and professional sports administrator in another sport) I am proud to be involved in a sport with such honest and admirable achivements. I know many women who push the liberalism too far, and in hockey we have seemed to work out the happy medium. Just coming away from an Australian Sports Commision 'More Women In Sport' forum, of which our National Executive Director spoke at (very well I must say) I know that this award is a fair and just indication of how our sport is run.

However, this does not mean that all things are equal every where... we must strive for those countries with second rate rights for women who do not allow them access to sport incl hockey; and we must also strive for unfairness in treatment of men, like those communities that make boys wear skirts should they want to play the game of hockey. I truley believe this is possible. Get together on this, and continue the equality for BOTH men and women! For together we can share our ideas, money, facilities and wealth of the enjoyment of the sport!
