Pressing Drills

I have adopted some of the drills from other sports and I have found out that if you change them a little bit they will work wonders with field hockey.

FIVE VS FIVE - PRESSING

Number of players Two teams of five, plus goalkeepers

Rules
· Normal game until a team scores
· When a team scores, they cannot score again until they lose a goal
· The winning team tries to play possession hockey – the losing team, using the goalkeeper as an outfield player, tries to gain possession and score· When an equalizer is scored, the game returns to normal
· No penalty cornersWinners

A team wins by: a) being one goal ahead at full time, or b) being one goal ahead for a five-minute period

PRESSING PRACTICE

I took this drill from Gero Bisanz, the respected German Soccer coach who won three European Women’s Championships and a Women’s World Cup runners-up spot while in charge of the German national women’s team. This drill is aimed at improving pressing play.

Game set-up:
Six attackers, plus one extra player, play against six defenders and one goalkeeper If the defenders win the ball, their opponents attack the player with the ball immediately to try to win it back..

The defenders try to dribble across the end line and score in one of the small goals. Playing time: 2 x 10 minutes

real useful stuff
THIS IS BEST PART WHERE THE LOSING TEAM GETS A RARE CHANCE TO FIGHT BACK AND USES ITS SKILLS OF PERFORMING UNDER PRESSURE.THE FIVE GUYS CAN COMBINED WELL AND FOCUS ON EACHOTHER.

Shoirts and set plays
Our team mainly scores the pecentage of it's goals of short corners and set plays so it is important to practice them, the best method is just start with a double battery and add on from there to make it a lot more complicated. The stickstopper is the key, have someone who can do it 99% of the time.

A team of champions will always lose against a champion team, remember that coaches!

Variation on the pitch
Tried it out at training recently. Works very well, I varied it by playing inside the 25m. When the winning team (those trying to keep possession) had the ball they could go to the corners of the 25 but had to try to stay outside the circle, whereas the winning team were trying to keep them from the corners and press them into the circle, get the ball and score. Works very well when you only have one keeper. Cheers!

The Press
what is a good way of practicing the actual press. My hockey team have real trouble getting the out in 16's because we cant deal with the other teams presses but when it comes for the other teams 16's we simply cant keep the ball. I tried a drill of my own once to get guys to practice putting pressure on and dealing with pressure but it failed miserably. Is anyone able to help me!!

cheers ashley
