A PENALTY shoot-out miss by the unfortunate Kenny Steele in a dramatic penalty shoot-out saw Aberdeen Asset Management beaten by Grasshopper Zurich in the `A' Division of the European Cup Winners Cup in Eindhoven yesterday.

It had looked much more hopeful for Aberdeen when Kevin Miller put them ahead on the stroke of half-time. Ralph Todt equalised for the Swiss from a penalty corner strike but, within seconds, Andrew Mowat restored the Scots' advantage.

However, in the final minute, they gave away a penalty stroke and Sacha Overhoff calmly converted it to tie the match up at 2-2, sending the contest into a dramatic penalty competition.

Both Douglas Anderson and Paddy Conlon found the net with their penalty efforts, but the miss by Steele and success from Alexander Mayer doomed Aberdeen.

In the women's European Cup Winners Cup in Spain, Westcoast Western surpassed expectations by winning bronze by a single goal against host club Ourense.

Western scored their winner in seven minutes with a set-piece straight from the training ground, a hit from Sam Judge being subtly deflected high into the net by Catriona Semple.

Manager Elaine Macara said: "It was a magnificent team effort with the heat and only three substitutes."

Hard luck but doubt many scottish teams would have done better!! Awesome level of competition.

Effort-less
"Are u mental" clearly demonstrates the delusions of grandeur so often exhibited by those who have never competed in European cup competitions. Get real. Its a whole different ball game in Europe. Just u concentrate on tying your laces.

is pelicano mental
how can you say gordonians did well in the cwc. they conceded 16 goals in 4 games, hardly the stuff of legend, but more importantly they were relegated because their bottle crashed not once but twice, once in the last minute of the game and then again in the penalty shoot out. and pelicano acn you tell me did your teams most influential player webster step up and take a stroke? and dont even get me started on them doing the country proud thats just madness!!!!! western ladies did the country proud by returning from their competition unbeaten and with a bronze medal, thats right.

I think this forum would be more interesting if people did not hide behind their anonymity.
I watched Gordonians in Europe and the effort they put in was tremendous. They trained extremely hard prior to the event and prepared as well as conditions allow - only 3 games outdoor after indoor etc. Drawing the final 2 games and losing out on penalties was the hardest way to be relegated and all the players, and supporters, were absolutely gutted. I know we've all been there.
Talk about putting Scottich hockey back years is nonsense. Scottish teams have always drifted between the A and B division and have always struggled in the A as there are no weak teams there.
No one is more sorry that next year's team won't be playing in the A div than the GHC players but that's life. The guys trained hard and did their best and I was very proud to see the level of commitment and effort they put in in Eindhoven. Good luck to whoever plays next year as it is a great tournament to be involved - whether A or B div.

Richard Freeland on Gordonians
Well said Freak. I am sure the Gordonians players did their very best and with one or two exceptions over the last 20 years Scottish teams have always "see -sawed" between the A and B divisions. There are absolutely no easy games in any of the Divisions in European Hockey and any player who has either represented their club at one of the Euro tournaments or indeed has played International hockey should know that there really is the thinnest of lines between success and failier at these tournaments. I am sure that Gordonians did their very best and the players would have been gutted at the manner of their defeat in the cross over game. In truth the squad was maybe a little "light" and inexperienced having lost Calum Wood to my club this year and with Richard himself being injured. The "new" players coming in to their team probably did very well and will be better for the experience of having played in a high profile tournament. Beleive me when I say the Gordonians boys let nobody down and I for one will congratulate them when I see them on Saturday after our league game.

European Hockey
Well done Richard and the Grange Player for lifting the level of the debate.
Ever since Harris played in Europe in 1972, at Frankfurt, the Scots have had it hard but that does not mean that the effort in not there.
My own Club have been at both ends of European Hockey, with some success, and I have seen the massive difference in standard between A and B Divisions and also between the CWC and Club Championships.
Lets just keep trying and all the best to the Bonagrass Ladies and Western Men who are the next in Europe. Give them your support.
If I can make one other comment it is this.
Having been involved in the Admin side of teams playing in Europe it would be nice to have a bit more input by the SHU.
Better results next time Gordonians and there will be one.

Previous comment wsan't from me
Who ever wrote that it was not me. Just a quick note to rectify that. I thought that gordonians have done themselves proud and that despite many of you saying that kenny lost it for them how many of you would have had the bottle to stand up and take a flick to keep your team in a competition of that magnitude. Good luck to who ever plays next year maybe the fact is that at the moment many club teams aren't equipped to play at the top level in Europe and a couple of years playing the so called lesser nations teams will do Scottish teams no harm at all.
who says we are not equipped?
