well, Guildford did not finish in the last spot but a very poor performance anyway, even though they had Nock Taylor back in Goal.
At least they have the opportunity to get it right next year. Anything else than promotion would make them the laughing stock of European Indoor Hockey

Promotion to A Division (as they will still be in B next year)?

Way to go.

Relegation
I think that only one goes down from the B this year due to the ending of the right of defense for the champions of the A. The ending of this rule, which often allowed 2 teams from germany, will now hurt the Swiss team that won the European A, as i believe they failed to repeat as Swiss champions. Thus only one team was relegated from the A, meaning only one team has to be relegated from the B, allowing Guildford to survive.

Have i got this right or are there any other interpretations out there?

Congratulations to the Swedes and Czechs for getting in to the A.

umpires
As I spoke with some players that played in Portugal, there were really some scandalous decisions from the umpires (especially Slovakian one) that badly affected Slovenian team Lek from getting a possible promotion in a match against home team and afterwards also a payback from Portugal umpire against them in a match for a bronze medal. So the question is how can a tournament manager allow that umpires from non-neutral countries can umpire on decisive matches.

Too bad my club (HK Marathon - Croatia) didn't play in Albena. We weren't able attend due to financial reasons!!!!
Seems like an easy pool, and possibly we would be back in "B" together with Espinho. Greetings to Hugo!

But now it's all just words and Croatian indoor hockey is not on the map.

Scotland is relegated from A to B.
Sweden and the Czech Republic are promoted from B to A.
Belgium is relegated from B to C.
Ukraine and Portugal are promoted from C to B.

Rot Weiss Wettingen are not allowed to defend their title in 2003 as explained earlier by Peter, as Grasshoppers Zurich beat them in the Swiss Indoor Championships finals two weeks ago. Grasshoppers will thus represent Switzerland in next year's European Indoor Club Championships A Division.

I think speaking as a neutral umpire from the USA. I think if they had neutral umpires from North America and we had some european umpires for some of our match's this could have been prevented?

This would sure solve problems of this type, but who's going to pay for it?

Besides, I find it quite appalling that it is not possible to find neutral umpires in Europe. There were 4 tournaments in this year's Club Championships (A, B, C1, C2 divisions), they could've just switched the umpires around to have umpires at each tournament who are not from a participating country.

Outsuder's comments
Outsider - whoever you are - get your facts straight, Guildford were without Nick Taylor (player of the tournament at finals night 2001) Ian Jennings (player of the tournament at finals night 2002, player coach and short corner specialist) Mark Pearn (Guildfords top scorer 2001) and Guy Fordham who also played last year. As for laughing stock of European hockey, that sounds like a bitter comment as Guildford have kicked arse domestically 2 years on the trot after forming an indoor side 3 years ago. Being the victims of your own success does not make you a laughing stock, it just makes you a good target for jealous losers like you who have nothing better to do at 6.30 in the morning. Saying that anything other than promotion is failure, obviously shows your ignorance and arrogance, as the division is full of teams who have much more professional indoor setups than England and less restrictive measures of who can and cant play set by their natiobnal associations. Engalnd is not a force in indoor hockey and never will be until the HA recognises its value and implements a decent league and national team.

outsider's comments
TO be honest, Outsider, your comments are pretty daft. Sven rightly points out that many players were not present, including Nick Taylor, who suffered a back injury on the eve of the tournament. I don't really think I need say much more than Sven as his comments hit the spot.

guilford are the best that england has to offer in terms of indoor hockey. before going to the B division tournament they had only played 14 indoor matches over the space of a few weekends. most of the teams that they were playing had two - three months worth of indoor hockey under their belts, maybe that's worth thinking about. winning the english national title twice is no accident and guildford performing poorly in europe is a reflection of how poor the standard of indoor hockey in england is. the game has so much to offer in terms of skill and entertainment but unfortunately has not been favoured by the "old farts above" that are not prepared to include it properly in our domestic agenda rather than squeezing it in over a couple of weekends.

Up the Ford!!

credit to Guildford for achieving what they did without most of their starting line-up. Who played in Goal for them then? And why was Ian Jennings not playing?

re Sven: Outsiders' comments were were published at 6.30 in the morning and you therefore call him, I quote " jealous losers like you who have nothing better to do"
Have a look when your comment were published. Only 25 minutes later. So who is sad and who is not? And maybe the time relates to Canadian time as this is a Canadian website.

Annyway, agree with anyone stating that indoor hockey is great entertainment, for players and spectators and deserves more attention than it gets in England.

yep, you must be right about the time thing, my point though was more that 4 of Guildfords players were basically too successful to be allowed to play in the European cahmpionship, which is an absolute travesty in itself, but that does not make Guildford a laughing stock, all it means is that people like outsider critiscised the wrong people, Guildford did extremely well to avoid relegation considering all the handicaps that the HA had given them. It was also more because of the fact that the comments sounded like they had come from a domestic rival who was still sore after losing a few weeks earlier, if you read it again, I simply called him a jealous loser + the fact that he wrote it a 6.30 was not the reason I called him a jealous loser. For your info, Ian Jennings is now the England lady's assistant coach and was therefore in South Africa with them, dont know who played in goal though??

The mighty Guildford rollercoaster
To resolve the question of who played in goal, it was Mark Limbrick. "Who?" you may ask - he is a former Guildford player who has moved elsewhere in search of 1st XI hockey, but is still committed to the Guildford indoor bandwagon. Aged 21 or 22, he deputised pretty well, so I am led to believe!

Anyone have any comments about the England world cup squad and its chances of success??
