KUALA LUMPUR: Holland’s Bram Lomans will be among the players to watch in the six-nation hockey tournament, which begins at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Friday. He is regarded as the top penalty corner taker in the world.

The 26-year-old Lomans, who is two metres tall, made his debut for Holland in 1994 and he has scored a total of 110 goals in 122 international matches.

Lomans, who has two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup victory under his belt, said that it’s nice to be the world’s top penalty corner specialist.

“I have scored a goal in almost every match that I have played for Holland. There is always pressure on me in every match because expectations are high on me,’’ said Lomans, who has won two Olympic gold medals and a World Cup winners’ medal.

He did not play in the Champions Trophy in Rotter-dam last November because he was nursing a knee injury.

“I have fully recovered from the injury and I am working hard on the penalty corners. I hope I will get it right in the World Cup next month,” said Lomans.

The World Cup Finals will begin here on Feb 24 and Holland, who have won the title three times, have been drawn in Group A with former world champions Pakistan, Spain, Belgium, Germany, South Africa, New Zealand and Argentina. Group B comprises England, India, South Korea, Australia, Cuba, Japan, Poland and Malaysia.

“It will be tough for us the defend the title. We are in a group which has strong teams, among them Germany, Pakis-tan and Spain,’’ said Lomans. “I helped Holland to retain the Olympics title in Sydney in 2000 and I intend to do the same in the World Cup.

Besides Lomans, Holland have another penalty corner specialist in 22-year-old Taeke Taekema, who scored three goals in the Champions Trophy last November.

Taekema skipped the Junior World Cup in Hobart last year to concentrate on the senior team’s preparations for the premier hockey tournament in the world.

Lomans
Lomans did play in the Champion's Trophy in Rotterdam. He'd had his knee operation and was recovered, but his form just wasn't up to scratch so he was on the bench more than on the pitch.

I agree Sohail is the best,
but there are some other very good ones
to watch out for at the WC.

Young Jugraj of India is extremely
promising and Troy Elder is very good.

Sohail is only good at PC's: he is a crap defender and Pakistan are not gonna
make the WC semis.

Corner Specialists!
From all the cornerspecialists mentioned, there are only 2 that can actually play a decent game of hockey...Abbas and Lomans suck at every other aspect of hockey (other than penalty corners)...The only two that actually play a decent to good game of hockey are Kurz (Ger) and Teakema (Ned)!!!

ps. don't bet on Holland to win the WC...even though they have the best player in the world: Teun de Nooijer!!!

I dunno dutchie!
The wc seems pretty open to me.
Germany and Australia are probably
favourites but favouritism doesn't mean
a thing.
A lot of people fancy Pakistan but I don't think they can
go all the way. Argentina had a pretty good 2001 and they may just be the
surprise packet of pool A. Spain
have a very strong outfit and shouldn't be ruled out. Holland are the world
champions and must be given due respect.
Further I think both RSA and NZ in pool
A are capable on their day of upsetting
one of the more fancied sides in pool A.

Everyone says pool b is an Australia , Korea show. But England, Poland, Japan
and Malyasia have all improved immensely. Lastly, a very talented
Indian side also lurks in pool B under a
smart coach.

It's wide open!!!!!

I have to admit that Sohail isn't the best defender, but honestly have you seen the guy scoop the ball? Its insane how far he can launch it. They should just scoop the ball instead of using any midfield, just launch the ball 75 yards up the field.

It`s clear that scott mccartney is the best, I think that if you can score against KK you are a living legend, no? Further more Scotland would have won the WC if they would`ve qualified!! Greatings from KL

WC Winner
I agree on the fact that Holland should definitely be considered as one of the contenders...but honestly the should have lost the Sydney final...Holland played the worst hockey ever.

Germany and Australia are my favorites this year...they've both been playing great hockey the past year. Germany was very impressive at the Champions Trophy (not losing one single game!) and therefore they'll be the team to beat...After the Germany and the Aussies there's 3 teams that will be competing for bronze (maybe even silver or gold): Korea, Holland and Spain...over the past 6 years these five teams have been the ones competing for the semi's and the finals...and that's not gonna change for a long time.

Pakistan, India (U21 WC) and Argentina might be the only teams to come up with a major upset and might even go a long way at this WC...but they simply lack the experience!

Another thing about this WC is the huge difference in the level of the teams in pool A and pool B...Pool A has 4 serious contenders (Ger, Hol, Pak, Spa) AND an outsider (Arg), while pool B only has two real contenders (Aus, Kor) and 2 outsiders (Ind, GB). The battle in pool A is gonna be the one to follow...that's where things will get really exciting!

Semi's:
Germany vs. Korea (lucky to be in pl B)
Australia vs. Holland

Final: Germany vs. Australia

Let the games begin!!!

I wouldn't call India and England
outsiders. NOr would I dismiss Malaysia.
- they are trained by a very good coach
and they're on home turf. England have
improved a hell of a lot and are
certainly on an even footing in the race. The key for India will be their
ability to convert their chances - if they do, I don't see why they won't make the
semis. I just don't think it's wise
to have favourites - this is an extremely open WC

bram (stoker)
Bram - what a lovely, down to earth guy. But what a poor field player he is, as evidenced by Holland's ordinary form at the Sydney Olympics. No surprise that the Dutch spanked butt at the 2000 CT without the injured Bram.
When he's at the back masquerading as a defender Holland are in 'Loman's land'.
Here's a thought on penalty corners - to take out the danger why not change the rules to be the same as hits and make the first flick at goal be of backboard height or lower. Might shake up a few teams and nudge the emphasis back towards field goals.

Why penalty corners?
We have seen many 'penalty corner experts' in recent past and also remote past. It seems that hockey teams of today rely very much
on penalty corners rather than on field goals.
Yes teams do attack the defending area of opponent teams, but only to get a penalty corner by hook or by crook. I think it is a very
stupid act to score all your team goals through penalty corners.
