The rules trial requiring three players always to be outside their defending 23 metres area will be continued, the FIH Executive Board has decided.

Four types of tournaments were recommended to trial the rule in the next two years; the 13th European Club Championship ?A? division; The Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2003; and both a junior tournament and women?s invitation event, which are to be confirmed.

Roger Webb, Secretary of the Hockey Rules Board, commented, "The rule is designed to increase space inside the 23 metres areas to promote attacking and counter-attacking hockey. A further effect witnessed during the experiment with the rule so far, is that it also reduces the number of hard hits into the circle. The rule has been extensively trialed in Australia and generally well-received.?

The two other previous rules trials, involving an enlarged scoring area and the long corner, will be discontinued.

The use of the edge of the stick, previously an experiment, will become an official rule.

I think that the FIH should stop messing around with the rules. Ive played junior international level and know how fast the game can be played. I think that the game should be left as it is at the moment because is great, there can be lots of goals and there is always alot of counter attacking and fast hockey. The rules changes are just changing the way the game is played to how the FIH think it should be played. The point of leaving the game as it is just means that there will be so many contrasting styles of play around the world. At the moment when a team packs the 'D' the opposition just have to keep working the ball round at a fast pace and have to prize open the defence. Just leave the game as it is-its great at the moment.

Stop all that stupid trials! Should the umpires count all the defenders inside there 23m area? Why does the FIH try to beat our super sport?
