16-year-old Danson gets top BBC award nomination and a call up to England Senior programme live on TV 16-year-old England Under-21 sensation Alex Danson capped a memorable year by being announced as a nominee for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year award and a member of the 2002 England senior womens development squad - all live on CBBC's flagship show Blue Peter (TX 1700, Friday 7 December 2001).
The teenager, from Hook, Hampshire, was appearing on the show at BBC
television centre in Wood Lane, London, when news of her call-up to the
senior programme was revealed.
Alex will attend the live broadcast of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards 2001 on Sunday evening. England and Liverpool footballer Michael Owen will present the award to the winner.
The news of her selection in to the development squad puts the Trojans star - who started 2001 as an Under-16 squad member - in contention for a Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games appearance according to England womens head coach Tricia Heberle.
"Alex has made great progress throughout the year and impressed in her
senior debut against Germany in October. She is one of twenty eight players in the Commonwealth Games squad and although only sixteen shows great potential to be under consideration for Manchester."
