The “Secret Sportsgirl of the Year” invites the nomination of young women who excel in amateur sports, inspire other teens and exhibit characteristics of healthy self-esteem.

Studies show that participating in sports is one of the most effective ways to enhance the physical and mental health of teenage girls. So this school year, Secret and the Women's Sports Foundation are launching a nationwide search for girls who not only excel at sports, but also embody the characteristics of healthy self-esteem.

Coaches, teachers, athletic directors, parents and peers are encouraged to nominate their favorite teen girl who participates in school-sponsored or open amateur sports. One girl will be selected from each of the 50 United States, and Secret and the Women's Sports Foundation will narrow the field to five finalists. From those finalists, a winner will be chosen in the summer of 2002. The Secret Sportsgirl of the Year's school or team will be awarded $5,000; the four additional finalists’ schools/teams will each win $1,000 and the remaining 45 state finalists’ schools/team will receive $250. In addition, the five finalists will be awarded a trip to New York City in the fall of 2002 to attend the Foundation's Annual Salute to Women in Sports Awards Dinner, where they will be recognized.

Not to throw cold water on this or anything, but does Secret plan on having any recognition for the fine athletes of the District of Columbia?

Or Puerto Rico? Vanuatu? St. Thomas and St. Croix? Guam? American Samoa? Or any of our other colonies?

what about Puerto Rico?
What a great idea. My concern is for all the American citizens in Puerto Rico that are part of the development of female athletics. This year Puerto Rico will send its first female field hockey team EVER to an international competition (Central American Games). There are talented young girls who would benefit from such a generous scholarship as the one given for sportsgirl of the year. These girls are Americans, why not accept a nomination from this "commonwealth" (hopeful state in the future)?

FH girls from Puerto Rico
Agree 100% with Al & Julia re the need for representation of Puerto Rican girls in this competition. All Puerto Ricans are US citizens pursuant to the Jones Act of 1917. Furthermore, the NCAA has administration over collegiate athletics there as it does throughout the entire USA. Let us hope that the administrators of this competition will correct this oversight in next year's voting.
