Drill Objective
- Using the aerial or scoop to create a dynamic reception.
- To improve scooping and receiving skills.

Equipment
Two Players, 5 balls.
Setup
In an area roughly 30x20yards, the defender starts with the balls, and an attacker starts 10-15 yards upfield, ready to come back towards the ball.

Legend

Defender
Attacker
Pass
Run
Aerial

Explanation

  1. The ball is passed from the defender to the attacker/midfielder . Attacker returns a simple pass to the defender and turns upfield.
  2. Running forward, the attacker first cuts either left or right, then turns back and sprints into the space she just created on the other side.
  3. The defender watches the attackers initial run and throws/scoops the ball into the space OPPOSITE from the attackers first movement. By running to one side, the attacker takes her opponent over and creates space on the other side for the aerial to land in.
  4. The attacker receives the ball on the run, controls and moves upfield.
  5. Repeat 5 times, and switch positions

Keys for Success

Defender:

  1. As you watch to see the attackers initial run, maintain a low body position so you are ready to release the scoop immediately.
  2. Don’t make the trajectory too high. Keep it relatively flat and fast to effectively beat opponents (although it obviously must be well over your opponents’ heads!).

Attacker:

  1. A deliberate initial movement to one side followed by a sharp change of direction.
  2. Look up and back immediately after turning – the ball should already be in the air.

OTC tip

Try to weight the pass so that B is running onto the ball and does not have to wait for the scoop to arrive. A correctly weighted pass will allow B to maintain speed as she receives the ball.

Progression - To advance this drill:

 - As you improve your scooping skills and accuracy, increase the aerial distance.
 - Try to execute the scoop on the move.

Evaluation:

The most important aspect of this passing and receiving drill is timing.

Focus on the defenders ability to release the ball quickly and accurately once she sees the attackers movement, and the smoothness of the attackers running aerial reception.

Can improve slightly
Nice Drill, easy to start and good for players to get the idea on the classic "back pass and overhead". You can add to this by placing a series of cones to driblle around, thus giving a target area (to improve accuracy) and an objective for the midfielder/forward (get control and dribble through the cones.

Drag Flicking & Overheads
A very basic demonstration of how to drag flick can be found at:

http://comunidad.ciudad.com.ar/argentina/santa_fe/jcr_hockey/arrastrada.htm

It just a visual example, the other really good website that I used to recommend has been replaced by a porn site :S

From what I have seen, an overhead pass is executed in a similar way, except that you are standing more upright and lean back to get more height and try to get under the ball more with your stick.

I hope this helps, I'll try to find beter examples when i get a chance
