The Bermuda Hockey Federation was finally able to get its league season underway this past weekend. The reasons for the postponements were as varied as any league in the world could ever face. First, the facility that was used up till this year has been sold and the field moved on the grounds and was not ready for the first planned week of the season. Next, teams from the island were heading overseas for tournaments in Vancouver, British Columbia and Atlanta, Georgia. The next week Bermuda was hit by a category 4 hurricane named Karen, which pushed back pitch preparations another week. However in typical fashion the league matches went off without a hitch.

Women’s ‘A’ League:
Cardinals A –v- Bluebirds A (Result: 0-2)
Bluebirds picked up the first points of the new season with a 2-0 win over Cardinals. Ellen Charnley got them off the mark early in the first half with a well struck goal from a pass into the circle by Sarah Smith. They continued maintaining the pressure on Cardinals throughout the game and were rewarded with a second goal. Smith was again the creator as she laid off the ball to Sarah Maltby who placed it in the back of the net. The game did not go all Bluebirds way and Cardinals had their chances but they could not find a way through a solid Bluebirds’ defence.
Swifts A –v- Canaries A (Result: 0-5)
A rampant Canaries took to the field against Swifts and fired an early warning to League Champions, Swallows, that they mean business with a 5-0 win over Swifts. Lisa DeSilva was first on the scoresheet with a solo effort goal after a pass out from the defence. She soon made it 2-0 and then Canaries went 3-0 up as DeSilva was awarded a penalty stroke for being obstructed in the circle, which she successfully converted. Ali Harvey was on hand to score goal number 4, picking up a loose ball which had rebounded off the keeper’s pads. Canaries continued to maintain the pressure on the Swifts’ defence, forcing them to commit errors, which resulted in a second penalty stroke, converted by Michelle Ming, for the 5-0 win
Women’s ‘B’ League:
Cardinals B –v- Bluebirds B (Result: 3-0)
Cardinals B team made up for the loss by the A’s with a 3-0 win over a new look Bluebirds B. Cardinals attacked well throughout the game and the Bluebirds defence did well to prevent them scoring until just before the half when Lise Baldwin picked up a pass from Heidi Lynam and put it past the Bluebirds’ keeper. The second half saw play evenly split with both teams having their moments. Despite some great passing play by Bluebirds they could not get that all important goal. The opposite could be said for Cardinals. Their second goal came when a pass from Baldwin in the circle found Lakae Dill, who slotted the ball home, and as Cardinals continued to attack they were rewarded numerous short corners for their efforts. They managed to convert one when Candy Foggo passed to Iesha Castle to score the third and final goal.
Ravens –v- Swallows (Result: 0-4)
Swallows first game of the season was against new team, Ravens, who were fielding many players new to the game. In time, experience told and Swallows came away winners. The Ravens’ defence did well to keep Swallows taking an early lead, Leslie Whorral, in her first game as keeper, producing some excellent saves. In the end the pressure paid off and Jenny MacIntosh got Swallows up and running with their first goal. As they continued to attack it was soon 2-0, Jenny Burrell finding the back of the net. Rebecca Pettingill then made it 3-0 with an excellent solo effort coming from right wing and Burrell was there again to score the final goal to ensure a 4-0 win. Despite the loss, Ravens played well and tried to take the game to Swallows only to come against a solid defensive line.
Canaries B –v- Swifts B (Result: 3-0)
Canaries began well and pressurised the Swifts’ defence early on, who did well to hold them at bay and keep the score 0-0 at half time. Eventually the pressure paid off for Canaries, as Georgie Barbosa netted their first goal. Swifts fought back with some aggressive play but Canaries responded in kind, which resulted in two further goals from Andrea Parker and Karla Preece for a 3-0 win.
Swallows –v- Police Orioles (Results: 1-1)
Swallows, playing their second game of the weekend, came up against a strong Orioles side who were fielding some returning old players. Orioles came out aggressively and were rewarded with an early goal from Zina Jones. This prompted Swallows to up their level of play and take an attacking game to the Orioles. They soon equalised with a goal by Jenny Burrell from a well worked short corner. The rest of the game saw the play running end to end, with each team having their chances at goal only to be thwarted by some excellent defence to keep the score 1-1.
Men’s League:
Police –v- Chameleons (Result: 0-6)
Champions, Chameleons, began their 2001/2 campaign against a 10-man Police team. However, even at full capacity the Police found it difficult to stop Chameleons controlling the game, who in turn allowed Police few chances to score. Steve Moreton started off the scoring and went on to complete a hat-trick. Jonathan Dodd, Bill Spencer and Mark Pettingill completed the scoring to give Chameleons a 6-0 victory.
BCS Panthers –v- Upstarts (Result: 0-3)
With many of their players missing, an under-manned Panthers’ side began their season campaign against a revamped Upstarts. Panthers began well and had the first attack on goal, but it was Upstarts who got off the mark first with a bullet of a goal from Donald Bowman, following a great cross from Alan Gilbertson. David Dunwoody soon made it 2-0 after a well taken goal from a cross from the edge of the circle. Upstarts kept up the pressure in the second half but could only add one goal to their tally, a strike from Martin Murphy which flew past the Panthers’ keeper, to secure victory.
