BETH ANDERS. USA
Norristown, PA

As a hockey player, Beth Anders is easily recognized for her past contributions to the U.S. National Team ? two-time Olympian, scoring star of the 1984 Olympic games, team captain ? but her most noteworthy contributions to the sport result from the sidelines as the head coach of Old Dominion University field hockey team.

With nine National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I championships, and a 390-55-7 record over a 19-year tenure, Anders is the ?winningest coach in college field hockey history.?

In 1990, Anders and her Lady Monarchs began what has become known as ?The Streak.? With a 4-2 win over Temple in 1990, ODU went on to win 66 consecutive games over three years, which included three national titles. Anders has guided her teams through undefeated seasons in 1984 (23-0), 1991 (26-0) and 1995 (25-0).

Last season (2000) Anders? team garnered a 25-1 overall record and a 5-0 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) record. In postseason play her team captured their ninth CAA conference title and went on to beat the University of North Carolina for their ninth NCAA championship.

Anders has twice been named National Coach of the Year by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association and five times CAA Coach of the Year. Anders was inducted into the United States Field Hockey Association Hall of Fame in 1989 and into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1998.

Anders is also the author of ?Field Hockey ? Steps to Success? published in 1998.

Beth is the US's best
Beth Anders is the best hockey coach we have in the US. Why, has the USFHA not reached out to her in order to get our program back on track. Her no nonsense approach, nd her ability to see talent where most others miss talent is outstanding. Every year, UNC, UMD, Michigan and the others get the glamor girls of HS hockey. Those coaches have the best schools, facilities etc. the players all come from the u19 national team, or HS all americans (Never the best way to judge talent. But Beth gets the blue collar girls who want to win. They work their butts off and get it done as a team. I have only been an observer of this sport for a few years and to me she is what US field Hockey is missing, period. Until the USFHA get a clue we don't have a chance. Tess Ellis et al. don't have a clue.

US Hockey
Granted Beth Anders is a very fine coach. Hands down. However, as an observer of the sport for only a few short years, you are in no position to evaluate what US Field Hockey is missing. It seems to me that the US Program is in a state of improvement. Usually this improvement is rarely about the coach but more directly correlated with the organization.

Back to Basics
Beth Anders is the best field hockey coach in the US. She is not about flash on the field but real substance. I have watched Old Dominion for several years. Beth teaches -- about basic skills, execution, strategy and conditioning. She motivates her team to set high standards and provides the necessary coaching and reinforcement. ODU is about TEAM performance and Beth's approach allows each of her players to become the best player they can be within the team system. That's why ODU doesn't go after the so-called high school stars but instead looks for talent, potential and work ethic. With those three ingredients Beth Anders can work wonders. US Field Hockey is improving but the progress has been way too slow. The previous post is right. Even if Beth Anders became the US coach, she could not do it alone. There must be a supporting organization that is aligned with the goals of the coach. But my guess is Beth Anders would have some ideas about that too and could help US Field Hockey get their organizational act together too.

the way
Been there, done that. Ander's is no different than all the other coaches that have been affiliated with US Field Hockey....substance or not. She may bring a good style and/or coaching technique but remember she has been a US Team coach before. It's standard. Coach gets hired, has no power, gets tired fighting, and leaves......all and all, it takes about 2-3 years. I don't see that changing no matter who is the Head Coach. Quicker improvement isn't in the coach...it's in the commitment of the organization.

Beth Anders is by far teh greatest field hcokey coach in the US. The article was nice, but it is saying everything that is in the ODU media guide. An article should be written by a former player so that more than just Beth's statistics are revealed. She is a great person who cares about all of her players. She has shown that she can take just a bunch of kids with heart and a strong work ethic and turn them into a great team. If she had the chance to work with the best athletes in the country who knows how good the national team could be!

I admire Beth Anders
Over the last year I have had the oportunity to observe many college coaches. I also have read their bios on the college websites. I have also listened to and spoken to many parents and players and former players.
I am most impressed with Beth Anders. I hope she continues to teach, guide and coach hockey for a long time.

Coach Position
Kingswood College and Rhodes University of South Africa are looking at the possibility of getting an overseas hockey coach to work with the coaching staff during the 2006 season. Chris Hibbert (SA mens goalkeeper) has been the head coach at Rhodes during the 2005 season.

Duties will include coaching at Rhodes and Kingswood, along with further duties at Kingswood. Accommodation and all meals will be covered by Kingswood while Rhodes will look at financial compensation.

This is an assistant position to the main coach, which will probably include coaching of the Rhodes 2nd mens side which plays in the same league as the first side. This role could also be coupled with a GAP year if necessary.

Please contact me if you are interested and need further information g.vanmolendorff@kc.ecape.school.za). Or look at the websites (www.ru.ac.za and www.kingswoodcollege.com).
