KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Defending champions Malaysia trounced Indonesia 9-0 Sunday to win the opening match of the women's hockey competition at the Southeast Asian Games.
Malaysia, whose preparations included a playing tour of New Zealand earlier this year, started nervously but finished strongly with six goals in 35 minutes.
Che Inan Melati led the scoring with four goals, in the 16th, 44th, 47th and 67th minutes, followed by skipper Geva Leela Devadason who notched a hat-trick in the 29th, 35th and 61st minutes.
Mary Along and Rosini Jamalani scored the other two goals.
The inexperienced Indonesians, coached by Malaysian Gurmit Singh, put on a spirited display but never looked capable of threatening their opponents.
Lum Sau Foong, Malaysia's team manager, said the home team made unforced errors that it could not afford to repeat against better opponents.
"We made too many silly mistakes in the first half we can't afford to do that against Singapore or Thailand," Lum said.
Singapore plays Thailand later Sunday in the second group match of the first round.
