A fantastic tournament was held in Zagreb last weekend, celebrating 95 years of founding the oldest Croatian hockey club Concordia.
For their 95th anniversary organizers invited 12 teams from 6 countries. Participants were 6 Croatian teams, two from England, two from Slovenia, one from Czech Rep., one from Slovakia and the biggest attraction IVHA, a team from India. Matches were played from Friday to Sunday, on two pitches, one water-based and one natural grass. The tournament had a respectable media coverage, which attracted a number of spectators.
After pool matches the biggest surprise was that VIP guests from India didn’t make it into finals, so they dropped in the group from 6th to 4th place. On the other hand a very pleasant surprise was Czech team Mnichovice. They progressed into the final group leaving pool favourites London Sabres behind. The final group was formed from the three pool winners Jedinstvo(CRO) , Marathon(CRO) and Mnichovice(CZE). Both Marathon and Mnichovice had beaten Jedinstvo so the last match of the day served as the big final between Marathon and Mnichovice. The match was quite exciting to watch, with many nice moves. Marathon was in control most of the time and they took a lead 1:0 at the halftime.
Afterwards they increased their lead to 2:0 and the match seemed solved. However Mnichovice pulled one back five minutes before the end, but that was it. The big birthday cup ended up in the hands of Marathon’s captain Zeljko Rudic and his team-mates.
The whole tournament was held in a very friendly atmosphere, with parties after each day at the big music tent. Once again Concordia deserves praises for organising the best tournament ever seen in these parts.
